I would say chess is a sport.  The first time I heard about Bobby Fischer was in the August 20, 1962 issue of "SPORTS Illustrated" :  "The Russians Have Fixed World Chess."  Sports Illustrated published numerous articles about Fischer in the years to follow.  If Sports Illustrated considers chess a sport, than who am I to argue.

Also, Chess was administered in the Soviet Union by the Soviet Ministry of Sport, and there exists today a Russian Ministry of Sport that supports chess.

Do not confuse Sports with Athletics.

At 95 years old, it's amazing that he hasn't retired from breathing, let alone official duties.

Very tough to have any sort of serious discussion here. A pity , as this is quite a serious topic for UK players whose government does not recognise chess as a sport at all, which prevents funding.

In Norway it was debated if we should join Norges Idrettsforbund (Norwegian sports assosiation), but we didnt, because Idrettsforbundet didnt allow small children to compete in championships or tournaments abroad. We ment that competing against great foreign  players was important for our childrens chesstraining.  I think membership in Norges Idrettsforbund could have brought state funding into chess, but it isnt so. We barely was able to arrange Tromsø- OL, i think it almost went bancrupt. We couldnt afford to host the Carlsen - Karjakin VM match, and when preparing for the chess team Olympics it was Magnus Carlsen that paid for coach to the team from his own pocket.

Unfortunately , I can only see fewer and fewer countries thinking of chess as a sport, as , despite all the propaganda, playing engines and databases have changed the game beyond recognition. GM chess is now more an academic exercise than a game or sport.

Golf and bowling are real sport. Chess is merely a pastime for grumpy old men.

The fine thing about chess is that it isnt for grumpy old men only. Boys and girls of all ages can play. In Oslo Chess Festival I played 9 games,  four of them against girls, two of the girls were 9 years old.

Completely agree. Chess is wonderful for kids all over the world to learn and play until virtually all of them give up at age 18 as they find there are more worthwhile ways to spend a life. After that, chess for fun only.

On a related note, is darts a sport?

There are a lot more physical movements in chess than darts, especially when the chess player walks around after every move or something : )  High precision piece placement, intense concentration, sure most throw darts standing up, but you can move your pieces standing up too.  You can even move your opponent pieces (adjust), can't do that in darts.

Could one do that in darts?

I think I remember reading on the new of some sports being played in the nude or something, soccer?  Can't remember and don't really want to search and see those images.

It would probably be harder to concentrate sitting on it than just smelling it. tongue.png
