Chess is NOT a sport!!!

Hahaha.

Perhaps our friend Cheater_1 is just a prankster getting kicks out of behaving like a ponce on the net, that in fact this alter ego of his is just a means of channeling all the pompous, petulant trash he wouldn't dream of advocating in the real world. Maybe he is studying the effects of groundless self promotion and mindless trash talk on a relatively contained community like chess.com. Or...

Its my opinion that very sensitive folk are especially sensitive to how normal they are, and often they compensate by trying to be as eccentric as possible. With C1, this manifests as immense arrogance. I reckon he's a sensitive guy, that he thinks people dislike him because he is special and he is out to prove it. And we are helping him. Every time we trash the poor kid, he probably thinks, "yip, just as I thought, they hate me cause they cant understand me" or something to that effect. I like him, personally. In all of his statements, I hear a little fellow crying to be heard.  Laughing

Hey Waggro. Poephol indeed, hahaha. I liked that.

Oh, and cheater 1, the only thing you have PROVEN is that you have a defective personality. But there is hope. Speak from your heart, and people will ( really ) listen. We are all struggling. Life is hard. I thank you.

I play chess while wearing a cup. Therefore it's a sport. :D

Well at least he knows that wikipedia is not a credible source...however as the general idea of the definition agrees with the oxford definition (which is the source you should be using) it works in this case.  But please don't ever use wikipedia in an (arguably) intelligent debate

Hello Everyone, sorry for taking so long. I was just doing some pushups and an ab workout to help focus on a chess match I got.

For the topic, Chess is a sport.

Now excuse me, while I go get my sport drink....

If you don't consider chess to be a sport, then you are just not playing with a big enough chess set:

Bobby Fischer said that he physically trains alot before a tournament or match because a chessplayer would have to sit there for about 5 hours.

hmmm...I wonder how a chessplayer would actually train and develop the muscles of 'that part of the body' to enable him to sit that long.

hotguy_210
Don't take it from me, man. I consider self-actualization a sport too. Smile

well i don't think that basketball, soccer, hockey, tennis, baseball, or football are sports...      but just becuase someone doesn't think they are sports, doesn't make it so...
milkshake_poptarts

of or pertaining to the body is physical

a use of energy or force; an active movement or operation is activity

Physical activity: Energetic action or movement pertaining to the body as distinguished from the mind or spirit.put them together and they make the same definition

My point? well you use your mind very heavyly during chess to win a game like wise though you are not moving too much of your hands ther is force that must come to doing so and chess my friend is a past time activity.

If you want to say things arn't a sport racing all you do is push a peddle and steer teh wheel, hunting all you do is pull a trigger... no much Physical Activity there eh? So please calm down and let it just die

one of the definitions of a sport given by Cheater 1 was (a physical activity engaged in for pleasure) Does that mean we will soon see Sex in the olympics after all you do it for pleasure so it's a sport right and i suppose for some people it can be competitve I was just wondering

Show me ONE credible source that defines CHESS as a SPORT. It hasn't been done yet. Enough with the definition of what a sport is or is not, let's stick to the definition of CHESS. Show me ONE CREDIBLE source that even MENTIONS the word "sport" in the definition of chess and then I will continue this debate. And by "sport", I don't mean he or she was a good sport...you know what I mean.

SHOW me one credible source that defines chess as ANYTHING other than a game or I shall continue to inflict more pain upon you masochistic wordmongers with my wordsmithinessitude.

KWAY

So we are assuming that nothing physical is going on in our brains? The brain does nothing physical while thinking?? It takes energy to think because there is a lot going on! And if you think it doesn't take energy to think then try not eating for a few days and play a game of chess! Chess is indeed a battle of the minds but to say the mind isn't a physical entity or to say it doesn't do any thing physical is just crazy! Our minds are physical! Very, very physical!!!

cheater_1

Please read my last post, we are NOT debating the physicality of chess (there is NONE) but rather the definition of CHESS itself.

STICK TO THE TOPIC, PEOPLE!!!

youmaycallmeGOD
all good points KWAY  but some people get a headack playing Monoploy and you cart tell me that a that is a sport

Is there a sport that can't be considered a game??? We dont need to show you anything by the way.... You are presenting the argument. You have to convince us. Not the other way around.
