chess made me realize how stupid I really am

Don’t worry, chess doesn’t equal intelligence. Expect in my case cuz I’m bad at chess and stupid.
I thought I was kinda smart before chess as well. I still do and I am not an ooga booga monkey negative iq neanderthal. I am quite the opposite, a agoob agoo human 2000 iq homosapien.

More of a misnomer that "smart people play chess" - in fact, there is even a trope titled that!
Chess is mostly about pattern recognition and that can come along with practice and chess study. Granted, being more intelligent might help with learning more patterns effectively, but chess is mostly about patterns - not how smart the player is. This is why not all smart people are good at chess

A lot of chess players have higher than average IQ scores, but not all of them do. @Hikaru is so good at chess because he clearly knows a lot of chess patterns like all chess grandmasters do 
In other words, it doesn't mean someone is smarter than you simply because they win a board game once against you
