I'm no expert but I can tell you what's been told to me. Study opening principles, not particular openings. For us lower rated players, we don't lose games because we're playing bad openings, we lose games because we miss tactics. Spending time studying an opening may be fun, but it's not where we need to spend our time yet.

I recomend going eenie meanie minie moe for deciding if you wanna play 1.e4 or d4 or try them both if you like.
1. Use ALL your pieces.
2. Control the centre.
Other stategies are much less bang for your buck.
The Kieseritzky Gambit
All of them. You need to figure out how a chess board works, and how the game works for you. Chess should be fun, rewarding, engaging, and challenging. Parroting someone else's opening theory won't help you once you get past move 8, but understanding how pieces work together, what a good pawn structure is, etc., will help you all throughout the game.
Experiment with all of them until you find an opening that suits your personality. I used to always use 1. d4, but recently I've found that it's boring, so I've switched to 1. f4. Theoretically, it's not as strong, but it's more engaging, and most opponents aren't ready for it anyways.
Try all of them and find out which ones you like , feel comfortable to play. Then , start playing these openings/defenses more often to get experience with it and you will not be beaten before move 20. If you start to understand your losses and the opening-goals in general , then you can start learning/reading more theory. By then you will understand what the books say.
First find out if you like 1.e4 , 1.d4 or something else.
What opening should I play?
That question is reserved for a trainer that can sit down and look at your games. They can shop which one fits your skill set at the moment. And they can tell which one will allow you to use your strengths and hide some of your weak areas.
As white, this opening tends to work really well against beginners:
if your black just copy white until they mess up or you cant copy without losing a piece
