Scid vs PC is the best free chess database program. I use it create a database of my serious (ie slow time control) games, then review them with the Stockfish chess engine to see if I have made any tactical mistakes.
Stockfish is the best free chess engine which is actually one of the strongest chess engines available, free or commercial.
Arena Chess is a nice free chess GUI. I use it to experiment with various engines and to log into freechess.org.
