Hi, I just joined, literally five minutes ago. Don't go on my profile because you'll think I'm a loser for not having any friends yet, but, like I said, I just joined, so don't judge a book by its cover.
Chess rating system
Well, for one thing, we're all real chess players. And, so what? Even if you're one of the extraordinary pro players, that doesn't mean you want to compete, so maybe people with an average of 2000 just do it for fun without showing it off at meets.

How did you come up with that ? and here....
I just thought that people should do things out of curiosity and for fun, instead of showing off whatever mad skills they may have.
I kind of just joined, and I was wondering how the program works. How do you play a game? Is it the little chess board in the comment box?

You just kind of joined, didn't bother to play any chess, but instead made beeline straight for the forums?
Do not take ratings too seriously. If you worry about your opponent's rating before hand, you will be at a psychological disadvantage.
It's best to just play without worry. This whole rating thing is a turn off to many prospective chess players.
Yes, I agree don't worry about the ratings too much. I find my rating goes up and down a lot (low 1400's to mid 1500's). But to me, the games with the 1400 rated players are not any easier at all! Lower than that 1400, yes, higher than 1600, yes, but in my range, all players seem about the same strength - the 1400 players seem as strong to me as the 1500 players. So the point I'm making is not to be too concerned about your opponents rating - if it's within a 100 points or so, you're near equal. That's my impression anyway.

Meh, I don't worry too much either. I struggle against anyone between 1350-1450 and see very little difference between them. I actually got beaten by a 1150 rated player earlier today - it's awful .
black to move, can you find strongest move?
nice winning combination I must say
unfortunately I missed it completely during a game
in the end I lost this game playing black, can you believe?
But my rating very very slowly is going up, 1856 after last game (above).

And I have lost from far better positions than that. Galling to outplay someone all through the game, then blunder away an endgame.

Bf4.
Bxf3 loses to Rf1.

Bxf3 looks good - do I get a cigar
no! you lost the game
What is it??
It's Bf4.

turtle, the general points system followed is as follows:
pawn - 1pt.
knight/bishop - 3pts.
rook - 5pts.
queen - 10pts.
of course points are not everything... the position of your piece also matters.. for example you might not mind losing a bishop or rook to save a pawn on the 7th row.. and points dont have any bearing on the game result.. it is just a basic framework to help beginners understand the value of different pieces
The queen is nine points, not ten.
Thanks for letting me know PeanutMonster
