i just joined.  do i only get rated by playing live games with humans?

You get a rating by playing rated games.  You can play against the computers and still get a rating.

I've been here for years. If you don't use a computer to select your moves, you have nothing to worry about.

But I am on a computer making moves.

Sorry but basically nw here. I have a questions, the ranks are based on your winnings, so your wins will be added to your rank while your losses will be deducted? Am I right?

That's a simplistic way of looking at it, but it's essentially correct, greatLEAH.

The stronger your opponent, the higher rating they will have. So, if you beat a really strong player, your rating will go up more than if you beat a weak player. And, if you lose to a weak player, your rating will go down more than if you lose to a strong one.

Generally, try to play against people within ~400 rating points of you. You will quickly find your level that way.

Please help me with this question

i am new in this website and i ve played... 20 games or something like that in the play live option

the first games i played VERY bad and i went down to 1000 points, and now i have won some games but i become only a few points for every victory

how can i become more points for a victory??

There is a coefficient (called the K-factor) that is higher during the first few games. So rating changes are quick and brutal during the first few games (you may lose - or win one hundred points in one game).

So it's like in a ladder system, is it?

Except in most ladder systems you get zilch for beating someone below you.  Here you do get something (unless they are so far below you that the ratings gain rounds off to zero.)

Chess is only a game. Bid deal...

PamirLeopard87

great article.

I find the rating system here on chess.com as inappropriate. Newcomers get a standard ELO of 1200, which is reasonable, but the same can't be said about the points you get in case you lose or win. In the very first games you can get 200 points in case of win as well as 200 points down if you lose. And as you play, this pointless rating variations gets weaker and weaker, so that if you have won 5 games in a row (with a bit of luck), you end up with a  1700-1800 level (even if you don't deserve it) and your ELO won't variate much. But then, as you play strong players, you get better, and you somewhat manage to stay "up there", even if your actual rating should be somewhere in the 1400.

On the other hand, if you are a good player, but got distracted back at home while you played, and lost, you got kicked down 200 points. And as you play your rating variations gets weaker (after 20 games or so, it's only 8-9 points you gain for a win). That means that you stay "trapped" in a limbo in the 1100-1200 range and keep playing over and over again with the same low rated player, stupid patzers, with no chances of improvement.

That's just stupid. I think it would be much better to get a rating after 5 games. A rating that is a sort of average of the 5 games you just played, depending on how many times you lost/won and against whom. This system right now, where you start with 1200, and with two lucky wins you are already at 1500 is ridicolous. Same in case you have a moment of bad luck and you get kicked down at 1000.

I think this is all a strategy to keep us here on chess.com, addicted to the website, playing over and over again, trying to win 30 games in a row to get a decent ELO, which is sheerly impossible.
