What do you guys think are some of the greatest chess rivalries of all time between two players? I can think of a few...

Kasparov - Karpov
Fischer - Spassky
Lasker - Steinitz
Botvinnik - Smyslov

I'd like to see some you can come up with...

For just sheer number of games they have played , and their importance, no rivalry will top the one between Kasparov and Karpov.  They played over 180 games against each other !

Few other rivalries have 100 , or more, games between the two rivals. Karpov/Korchnoi does and so does Botvinnik/Smyslov.  So Karpov has rivalries with two players that both involve more than 100 games !  Amazing !

A rivalry not mentioned yet is Spassky/Petrosian with more than 70 games....

Definition is probably needed.  What makes a great rivalry?  Level of players, number of games, personal animosity?  A great rivalry might be Morphy-Staunton although no games were played!  If one looks at the national/regional/state levels there are many such rivalries.  Most of what we are listing, however, seems to require a World Champion.  Steintz-Zukertort?

Good point as we might differ on our "definitions" of such rivalries. For me the two players would have to have played a rather large number of games against one another so  Morphy-Staunton wouldnt be included in my list of rivalries.

Spassky-Korchnoi  also more than 70 games played
