I have been playing chess for a while now, and want to buy a chess program for mac. Im willing to pay up to 70$ for good software. What engine is good( ELO 2600+) , can analyze games the best, and have a database or tablebase?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Please don't comment just to advertise a certain program.

Hiarcs is what you want to get for a strong chess macintosh chess engine.

Also keep your eyes out for ubisoft to release a mac version of chessmaster, they have done it in the past (the most recent version was chessmaster 9000, version 9.  They are currently on version 11)

Not on a Mac running OS X. If you have an Intel Mac you should be able to install Windows using Boot Camp or Parallels and then run Fritz, Rybka or any Windows software.

I was considering that, but I dont have Windows and would have to buy it.

Anybody using Fruit /Toga?

Sharukin

I use Fruit 2.3.1 on Mac. It works very well with Sigma. I have also used Toga but it is not as strong as the latest Fruit.

is it free if so where do you get it?

Sharukin

Fruit is free and I got it by putting fruit chess into Google. This link should lead straight to the download: http://www.superchessengine.com/fruit231-mac.gz

It says cant open fruit because no application to open it in.

Sharukin

Have you extracted Fruit from the gz archive? If so you need to add the engine to Sigma. Analyze>Engine>Engine Manager will allow you to add UCI engines to Sigma.

? I got it from your link, opened it and thats what it said .whats gz?

Sharukin

gz is gnu zip, an archive format. You may need Stuffit Expander to unzip it. Ican't remember wher Stuffit comes from but if you put it into Google you should find it. The expander software is free.

Sigma chess is a good program and it has the Hiarcs 11 chess engine

go to sigmachess.com I think it's free, it's a good no frills chess program.

Sharukin

I have zipped the whole thing and put in the downloads part of this site. It is under resources. Once you have extracted it (OS X should do that for you) open Sigma and use the engine manager to attach Fruit to Sigma. After that you can use Fruit as the engine within the Sigma GUI.
