Any one in the Chessmaster series is good. Chessmaster8000, Chessmaster9000, etc.
Chess software
I have Chessmaster XI. I bought it a few years ago, and only recently started playing when I discovered the chess.com app for my iPhone. As a novice, it's OK. I cannot really comment on the quality of the play because I a terrible player. However the non-standard interface is a big turn off to me, and often a drawback. It doesn't work as well as I'd like it to work with two monitors (it does, but there were a few glitches). I tried to import a Chess960 game into the system to play it back, and it didn't like the non-standard board position. Also, i'd like to be able to play with bizzare board configurations to learn the pieces (e.g. putting a single knight on the board and then analyze the number of moves to get from point A to B). Also, it'd be nice to have more control over things like the sound or the menuing system. Sure it's a game, but I'd prefer standard Windows interface. There is stuff in there for kids, and I think the game would be great for someone in their pre-to-mid teens. I'm going through Josh's tutorials on it, and they are pretty good so far on the basics and common strategy. I'd suspect if you had some training in the past, it all of it would be refresher with a few new insights.
I've seen it available on Amazon for $10-20. In hindsight, I'd probably have gone with Fritz but the $100 for a multi-core version is a bit more than I want to spend , plus I hear you can only run it on one computer at a time - whereas I have a home PC, laptop, and office laptop and don't really want to pay $300 when I'm the only person whose going to be using the software).
Hi all.
I'm wondering if anyone can reccommend chess tutor software. I would want something that provides hints and rates moves. Something with a tutor mode. If anyone uses gnu backgammon then it would be alot like that. I'm not a great player and need something that can teach me good moves since I don't get to play with people live often to practice.
