Chess study; daily life/chess

I had this idea where I could look at factors of daily life and see how they affect your chess performance. Basically, message me a game, either here or directly on chess.com, and put these factors when you played the game, that I will list shortly. Please just show your average game, and for each win please also put a loss. Draws don’t really affect that, but you can put them too. I will take the average accuracy compared to the average accuracy you normally play at (I have unlimited game review) and see what is a big changer and what’s not.

1. put your sleep in one of these categories; worse then usual, normal, or better then usual (amount of sleep/ well rested)

2. Put the amount of previous chess games you’ve played that day

3. put your amount of exercise into less normal or better then usual

4. Say if you’ve had unhealthy food that day

5. Time of day; morning (4 am- 11:59) afternoon (12pm-5:59) and night (6pm-3:59)

6. if you were listening to music or not

And that’s all! Any player of any elo can give data, and if you message it to me directly, it is absolutely confidential and I won’t tell a soul who the data is from, but the data will be on the results (all data is shown but players who gave games are not.) Thanks in advance! Also; I should probably say if you are uncomfortable even giving this data to just me, you can answer some and leave out others and I will only count the data for the ones you answer.

24 rapid games played today (18 on here 6 on lichess).

I got 5 hrs of sleep yesterday.

No unhealthy food.

However, when i started playing games at night today (9-10:30 I think) I lost 5 times in a row even to players lower rated then me.

Thanks! I will take the last game you won, and the last game you lost, since I do need specific games.

Ofc np. My record today was 8 wins and 8 losses I think. However, before 8:00 p.m, my record was 8 wins and 3 losses

Because I beat you 3 times hehehheh

Ok so far I have 4 games in the database, and will expand it tommorow if more people share games (I’m using some of mine too) please limit yourself to like 10 per person just to not flood the data with one source.

I will have games to share this evening, I just woke up so I don't have any for the moment. Also connection can also be a factor, every time my connection is bad I focus on it more than the game lol

I'd say how it went in my last OTB tourney because I don't remember how tired I was in my online games.

Game 1 - Good night sleep before (8 hours)

This was an easy game and I got a winning advantage pretty quickly. I did my typical thing of simplifying the position too much when I'm better instead of going for the kill there and then. But I ended up winning anyway

Games 2 and 3 - Bad nights sleep (6 hours because I woke up in middle of night because my eye was irritated)

Game 2 was against a much stronger player and he overextended trying too hard to win. I ended up in a winning position against him but missed a tactic that would've been lights out. After that he slowly outplayed me and I lost. Idk if this was down to a lack of sleep or just him being a better player, maybe both

Game 3 I again got a winning advantage early on. But misplayed the win and ended up getting in serious trouble. I managed to scam my way to win in the end but it was scary

Games 4 and 5 - Average nights sleep (7 hours)

Game 4 was one of the most comfortable games of my life. I maybe made it a bit more confusing than it needed to be (as per usual) but I still converted with little trouble

Game 5 I was tired I guess because I hadn't caught up on sleep properly. It was late and I'd done a lot of chess so this was probably the most tired I felt out of all the games. Out of the opening I was worse and I offered a draw that was declined. However, he made a mistake at one point and I pounced. Playing pretty much perfectly afterwards and I won. The only thing is I couldn't be bothered to think for very long and calculate deeply so I was mostly going off intuition which is a bit dangerous

Conclusion

I'm not sure the sleep affected the results too much. But I definitely felt more sluggish for the games I was tired in and less sharp tactically. I could've easily lost some of those games. The games I had a good night's sleep for were very comfortable though

Sorry I only covered the sleep part. I always eat and exercise well

Games 3 and 5 were my 2nd games of the day

Games 1, 3 and 5 were quite late but games 2 and 4 were early

Thanks so much! For the games I am averaging the accuracy based on your accuracy in similar time controls. This will help a lot!

I went to enter them into my file thing, but realized that I don’t actually have the games… could you send them in order please?

Avatar of chesssblackbelt

Is the file gonna be shared with anyone? I'd rather not because I could get doxxed. I can DM the games if it's not shared

Avatar of chapeauchess

Every time I am really tired, I play worse. I wonder if people play differently when listening to music?

No, it is completely confidential, it’s just in my notes thing, and the final results won’t show who gave the data.

That was actually going to be one of the things, thanks for reminding me! I’ll add that now.

Avatar of chesssblackbelt

Noice I just DMd it

Avatar of shru

Thanks guys! I’ve gotten 20 games so far, and I think I’d need about 50 to get a decent reliability on the data.

Feel like today was a pretty normal chess day for me so ima submit.

1. 7 hours of sleep last night (average is 9)

2. Played give or take 10 games today

3. Haven’t really exercised much since winter (don’t call me a bigback it’s freezing 💀)

4. Nothing unhealthy. Just my usual diet.

5. Here’s the interesting info (maybe)

Morning: 3 Games, 1/1/1.

Afternoon: 1/1

Evening (past 10:00pm):
0/6. and yes, if you are curious, I am indeed extremely tilted rn. Third time I have had 1300 elo and lost it……….. part of my losing is prob from tilt but I tend to play a LOT worse at night.

6. I love music but for me personally it distracts me. Weirdly it makes my mind focus too much on the song and not enough on the game. So no, I do not.

Avatar of Chesswhitebelt
Ok! Wasn’t my best chess day tbh if you want to just add whatever games I play tmr instead (I will still do the same exact play schedule I said above just I will hopefully play slightly better than I did today lmao)
Avatar of shru

I’m getting very close to 50, and I want ideally 100+ games, but we’ll see. Any games in mass quantities along with data would be greatly appreciated

Avatar of Chesswhitebelt
Going to resubmit this!

1. Slept 9 hours today. That’s my average

2. Played 18 rapid games today

3. Did a good walk around the block today for exercise

4. Nothing super unhealthy compared to what I typically eat.

5. Morning: I played four games and went 2-2.
Afternoon: I played six games and went 3-2-1
Evening: I played 8 games and went 2-5-1.

I will send a few screenshots of the games so you can look over them. I know this was my excuse last night, but I typically play a lot better than I have the past 48 hours! 😂

6. No music. I am a music lover, but I find it distracting.
