Chess the model for a classless society

Chess is the great leveller.  It doesn't matter what school you went to or what your parents did.

It's pure intellectual combat.  Everyone starts equal and has the same chances in the game.

Same pieces, same rules it really is the model of a socialist utopia.

This must be why the game is so enormously well represented and successfully played in the formerly communist state of Russia and why it is so popular in the Socialist Republic of Wales.

Power to the people!

However I am yet to lose to anyone of working class parentage or minor breeding.  I mean they just don't get the education what can they expect?

Have you ever lost to anyone from a lower social class?

How did you cope with the shame and social stigma?

I don't care who beats me as a person, but as a player.
The game defines the player, and I might feel bad about a worse player beating me. The class or personality have nothing to do with the player

ps. I like your Idea, but I believe russia supports chess because Intelligence is something to be proud of, instead of most western cultures where it's nerdy or weird. I believe Russia also supported chess with schools and such as a part of development. I'm not sure about this

But come on imagine losing to someone who says "toilet" instead of "lavatory" how could you show your face at your Gentleman's club ever again?

I dont understand what you mean by "lower social class" and "minor breeding"  God made man in his own image.

So why do we all look different? Is he just bad at it?

No, he is god.

He'd probably just have 6000000000 split personalities

Chess and art seem to be the hobbies of the lower class, not the rich. It costs money to play organized sports, collect antique cars and travel the world. However, any bum can spend his days playing chess or drawng squiggles on the backs of envelopes. If one were to examine the U.S. prison population, I bet you'd find a high percentage of them know how to play chess.

I hate losing. But when I do lose, I don't really look at my opponent's background or social class. It's irrelevant.

I do -- but before I play.

Less because I'd prefer to pre-empt the shame of owning up to a potential loss to one of those unwashed philistines, but more because I'd prefer to pre-empt having to associate with them in the first place.

The phenomenon of the Genius is not related to class or money. If it is, then the richest would have been the brainiest.Genius breeds where people can think freely, beyond societal class.

Chess is a universal game that knows no race, age, sex, religion, politics, social standing, and personal agenda.  I treat the game as a game, and my opponents as opponents. No more, no less.  It is all about war!  Take no prisoners, and no slaves.

With all that said,  the high falutin' society can take it where the sun don't shine.  Laughing

I take tremendous exception to the second half of Beast's post. Unlike Beast, I never had the great good fortune to be born in Wales and to be educated at one of Rhyl's finest public schools before taking my place at Addfwyn College, Swansea. While Beast was being lustily initiated into the Welsh jeunesse dorée by the older boys at Rhyl, my own schooling was cut short when I lost both parents in the goldmines of central Victoria. For me, the only way out of the mines was professional sport, which I loathe. Unlike Beast, I'll never know how to scan a Homeric hexameter or appreciate the supple cadences of a Horatian Ode. I do say toilet, and Pardon? and Oi, slag, do you wanna root? but you know what? I don't care. I enjoy meat pies, chicken vindaloo, Jim Beam and Coke, and would rather cut off my own head than drink a glass of wine. I'm rubbish at chess, but I'm a demon at the oche. I may not be a pampered scion of the Welsh ascendancy, but I'm someone who enjoys kicking back with a few cold ones and who is always there for his mates in a tight spot. More to the point, I'm a good person. And in the end that's all that matters. Can you say the same?

funny thing...batgirl posted something about Petrosian's youth in her blog. Take a look...think you can stack up to his "minor breeding" and "working class parentage"?
