This is a discussion about two very different games. It belongs in Off-Topic.
Chess vs Poker
They both require a lot of thought and study. Past that I find the differences to be much greater than the items in common. In chess I desire a strong game that challenges me. In poker I look for the weakest games possible. The fastest way to increase your winrate at poker is proper game selection. Further, chess is mainly playing the board. I don't care if you are happy, sad, or angry when playing. At poker however there is great psychology involved. Most hands are won without a showdown which leaves great room to play the player and not your hand.
I hate to see poker in the same sentence as chess. Poker isn't the beginning of a pimple on chess' rear-end.
I play poker sometimes on "Full-Tilt" poker.com, but I pass it off as nothing but another game. I see chess as something totally different.
Another thing I hate to see is chess in the toy section in stores right next to all the other board games, sure, technically chess is a board game, but for some odd reason it just doesn't seem to belong in that section.
There's no bluffing in chess. There's no down cards either. It's right there for both players to see. No card at the end to save my ass!
Pattern recognition is the main overlap, I'd say. The best poker players know how their opponents played (betting) and reacted (gestures, facial movement) to every given situation. The best chess players instinctively know what to do in many, many positions. But chess has complete information, and poker has incomplete information, so naturally they're completely separate entities.
Pattern recognition is an important component of any skill so it's really an aritificial overlap.
BTW: The whole body language deal plays less of a role than Hollywood would like us to believe. Body language is not consistent enough for that and most good poker players fake it anyway. Percentages are much more important. Similarly, the body language of chess players should not be trusted because a lot of them are using it as an additional weapon in their game.
I love this post

Poker bring the element of luck which makes a significant difference. Chess is better!
Chess is better period.
I used to play and win a lot at poker. Now that I am older I lost my abilities.
Still retain most of my chess abilities.
For me now, poker is harder. and duplicate bridge and bowling 300 games on Wii the easist.
i like chess more. chess is like a sport and poker is like a casino. in poker you don't need a coach but you need a backer if you are good. poker has a lot of action and not sure about chess lol
I know it is funny how poker aired on ESPN and other TV networks, yet chess is used everyday in every sports as an analogies still not main stream go figure.
What do they have in common? How do they differ? Which do you like best?
I know this thread has been made at least once before but I'm starting a new one for two reasons: 1) I think its a fascinating discussion and many of the newer members might have interesting comments, and 2) I'm considering starting a group for chess.com poker players so I thought this might be a way for people to show it if they're interested.
