Chess.com does not work well on phone

Whenever I play chess on a phone/tablet I get disconnected from games almost all the time. What is the best solution (besides the app).

I noticed that the classic version works fine most of the times, but this new enhanced version had a lot of bugs. However, recently they claimed that the bugs are fixed. But I am too lazy to check it out again, my classic version is doing OK on Android platforms. Also, if you are playing in the area with a weak network signal (one or two bars), you are likely to get lags and disconnects.

Apples and oranges. Phones were invented for people to talk to people. Chess was invented for people to talk to PIECES.

What kinds of things do you say to the pieces? And, more interestingly, what do they say back to you?

I've read masters who will say things like 'let the pieces tell you where they want to be'. I always assumed this was some type of metaphor used to look at the qualities and abilities of a piece to determine where it should be.

But, now, I'm starting to wonder if they actually heard the pieces talking.

Not that I'd mind. I would accept advice from an insane chess master.

I said it as a joke because the OP said,"what is the best solution". My rational thought was use a phone for what it was designed for, and use chess for what it is designed for. I know I'm a dinasaur when it comes to technology, but my 2nd thought was along the lines of what you said about masters letting the pieces tell you where they want to be.  BTW; I am insane, but I'm NO master.  Oh wait; in the words of Gerry Seinfeld, I'am master of my domain. Here's my $50 bucks. I'm out!

This thread is quickly turning into an argument.

Well, perhaps you should consider playing more often on a laptop/desktop. On PC and Mac, chess.com works just fine. In my view, you'll get more pleasure out of live chess using a laptop as your main access to the website but that is up to you.

You should check your Wifi internet connection, if all works fine there then I am at a loss. For sure these chess apps for Android are still prety much ''experimental'' in the sens that they do need a lot of polishing and improvements. I suggest you take that to the staff on the help&support forum.

I agree that standard game and even some longer blitz (5 or 10 min) can be played on laptop or desktop just fine. However, playing bullet on these devices is just so frustrating, it takes much longer to click the mouse to make a move than tap the screen on mobil devices for the same purpose. You'll lose more games on time using mouse devices vs. finger taps in bullet chess. Plus, mobil devices are just more convenient overall, you can play a game any time almost anywhere. The options in classic mobil version are a bit limited (you dont see challenges, you can only submit your challenge, no tournament play, etc) but it fairly works. The new full mobil version is supposed to have almost all options that you see on the desktop, and I hope it will work someday (maybe alrteady works?). Does anyone have a normally working new full version called Chess - Play & Learn? I would like to get some comments/reviews on it, I tried it a couple of months ago, it sucked; but I got a message from the Staff that it was fixed.

Well, in my view grabing the piece with a mouse and move it to the appropriate square as fast as possible is what gets closer to OTB chess, where you actually need to move your arm, grab the piece and move it without droping it , and tap the clock. ;)

Also, the size of a laptop/desktop screen offer a much better experience than the 7 or 8 inches screen size of a smartphone.

The only advantage I see of playing chess on a mobile device is to be able to ''play on the go'' but unfortunately for me, these are not the times I play live chess at my best.

Yea I've got the new play & learn app, it's shite. Very shinny and polished ui, but constant disconnections and lag. After you've lost 4 or 5 won games you get the extra treat of a WARNING for deliberately disconnecting.. It's not my signal, I can tether my phone to the laptop and play for hours on fics & chess.net without any trouble... Very sad, I only bought a smartphone to play chess on.

Well, I guess I will stick to classic version for a while. Anyone with mobil play & learn app, please update on when this version becomes usable on Android platform, it does look appealing. Thank you in advance.

Writing good software for mobile devices is incredibly difficult given the wide range of hardware and operating system versions!  Chess.com does a great job considering all the difficulties involved!

sorry to say: you need to get the apps.

Kudos to that! I am very happy that chess.com is working on improvements, and I think I am being positive/constructive as I want this app to be at least as good as classic version. I actually helped to identify a bug and bring it to chess.com attention (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chess-mobile-app-live-games). At this point I only know 2-3 people who have problems with this app, so it may be just a very few of unlucky us. However I did not see a single person saying that this app works good, it does not meant that it doesn't though. Again, I like chess.com and I am trying to be helpful. Don't look for any negative bias in my comments.

P.S. This was the reply to sycophantastic
