Just an interesting fact

Chess.com is worth approx $600,000. They get daily ads revenue of $800

Interesting, but I daresay it's worth more than that, as that is barely enough to pay the staff's daily wages?

I wonder what other chess sites are worth?

EternalChess

They get $25,000 per month on ads alone, imagine with membership payments as well. Let's say 1% of members have an avg of platinum membership. 100,000,000 members 1% is 10,000 who have membership. An average of platinum ($6 bucks per month) which is $60,000 off payments of memberships. $60,000 + $25,000 = $85,000 per month, quite a paycheck! Sorry if there's no space between sentences, I'm on iPhone and I haven't figured it out yet

EternalChess

1,000,000 not 100,000,000 sorry

your numbers are not accurate (we don't get nearly that much ad revenue, for example), but your thinking is correct. unfortunately you aren't taking into consideration our hardware, hosting costs, and the 12 people who work here? :)

Well the site said $800 per day on ads :P,

and yeah i wasnt taking into consideration on those but i knew there were hosting cost and the staff (not the hardware), if i estimate how much this site makes, i would say around $40,000 PROFIT each month. and when you do some math, 40 grands + 12 months = $480,000 dollars a year but with the staff.. i would say you pay the least important working staff hourly and the most important staff the most and monthly or so.

I guess YOU would make around $100,000 a year. :P But the site is growing, and more ppl are joining and getting member so my numbers arent accurate :P

i wish! also, consider that we're now 3 years into this and i've been the one investing my own cash up until now to keep it afloat ;)

EternalChess

haha that sucks, but in the end your the one making the most money :D

Any business is rich if every cent was pure profit, but of course that's impossible, every business has overhead.  For example how long did it take to pay off the servers?  What's monthly payroll?  If Erik liquidated everything he'd get the cost of the servers + pure profit on only 1 months ads and membership money, and even if he magically was able to kept collecting it for a year after the servers were gone you can't retire at 20-30 with $600,000.

Now the site might be making some money and that's great, but it's silly to think that every dollar of ad and membership money goes into Eriks pockets Tongue out

doubt they got there own big time servers...yet.

we have 22 servers and a switch. most are dell 1950s and a few 2950s. the average cost of a server is $2500 (dual quad cores, many of them with 32BG or ram). two of them are massive multi-harddrive machines.

badaboom.

masteryoda

hey erik, where are did you buy the storage for your servers? Netapp? (Because you live in Mountain view and netapp is HQ in Sunnyvale)

That's right, because there is nothing that anyone does is related to money. Every time that someone helps you up if you fell, they want to mug you. If someone shakes your hand, it's because they are desseasied and want to take your wallet out of your cold, dead, hand.

I'm a pessimist, but at least I'm not cynical...

Crazychessplaya

After three years, chess.com worth is up at $1.17 Million. Not bad.
