is there a reason that my oppenents clock appears to stand still, as they play there move!!!!!  mine ticks and tocks but theres shows no difference!!!!!

Christopher_J_Hill

I have played a few games when my opp. clock wont go below the starting time, and sometimes it appears to gain time!!!!

I see you've played several 15+10 games. The +10 means each move 10 seconds is added to your clock. If one plays very fast they will not lose time, and may even gain time. Also, check the lag-bars. Lag can introduce delays into games.

atomichicken

rich it's not cheating, it's called lag.

Christopher_J_Hill

This may be a "stupid" question, but what is lag??? and where are these lag bars????

Christopher, there's a delay, dependent on your Internet connection, between you making a move and the server seeing it. When the lag is high the clock appears to do funky things, so it's best to have a low lag and to play opponents with a low lag. To see someone's lag (check your own first) click on their name in the Live Chess chat window--there will be a bar to the right of their name. Alternatively, in the Seek's tab look at the bar to the right of an opponent's name. GREEN is good, ORANGE is not so good, RED is poor. The reason I said to check your own first is because if yours is poor you're going to have these issues no matter what your opponent's lag is. Lag is a key issue in online blitz chess--especially with no increment--no matter what server you play on.

I like that idea but you can't really phone up your isp and say, can you give me decent internet for half an hour so I can play a game of chess, lol. Anyway, one topic again, what does the bar mean when its flashing, and also to chess.com, if the player has bad connection, surely pinging it to get the responce time will just make it worse? Would it be possible for exampel to set how often it pings you?

If you have a good connection it's straight-forward to avoid opponents who have a bad connection. If you have a poor connection you may have the option of switching to a better service provider--maybe not, it depends. :)

First, ping packets are extremely small, and they don't need to send very many to get a fairly accurate assessment of your delay--its impact should be negligible.

Second, I'm hoping/guessing they don't use ping per se at all since ICMP packets are often given preferential treatment and hence wouldn't have the same network delay and loss characteristics as chess moves being sent to and fro.

MadnessRed> what does the bar mean when its flashing,

No idea. Anyone?

I'm a moderator on Live Chess and completely agree with likeforests. There's no cheating going on in these situations, just the processes of imperfect global communications. Lag is something that we all have to put up with. I suffer from it occasionally and I've got good equipment and sole use of a 20 meg wired connection. Just bite the bullet and play chess! Kiss

Ok ray....i guess im a little more clear on the subject of lag, and i guess your right, i should just bite the bullet and enjoy playing chess!! after all thats why we are here!!

simonp81

I've just been accused of cheating by pressing f11 to get more time, when it was probably a lag issue as mentioned above. I didnt notice my clock going up myself though!? Can you give yourself more time by doing this?

I feel like slapping the guy!

On the whole I am really enjoying this site and find that the server works very well
