PHIL101: Copernican Revolution

The Copernican Revolution is the general name for the shift of thought following the Renaissance. (Copernicus is famous in astronomy for showing that the earth revolves around the sun rather than the sun the earth, as the ancient Greeks thought.) These enlightenment discoveries reached to all areas, pulling the major disciplines out of the Middle Age daunting mentality.
The impact of the revolution also had a significant effect on philosophy. No more was "the Good" that which determined the laws or who would be your wife, but rather the Law, "Woman" determined whether you were good or evil. Virtue and vulgarity was no longer a free choice in your power but rather determined by another, the effects of which you felt but knew not why you were compelled by your woman.
The course will examine the effects of the revolution on human thought, referring to, among others, Plato, Descartes, Kant and Nietzsche.
