“Daily Chess “

Hi. I’ve never played the Daily Chess option. Back in the day, I played some correspondence chess but gave it up because the games took too long. (The moves were made via snail mail. Imagine!)

My question is this. Obviously, you are not generally permitted to use a chess engine in a game. It’s called cheating. But does that also apply to Daily Chess in which you might be making one move every 3 days?

Not sure i even want to try it if engines are allowed. What’s the point of seeing who has the better engine?

I think the abuse of vacations on a daily chess game is further annoying

For some reason, cheating seems far more prevalebt

For some reason cheating seems far more prevalent in Blitz and Rapid games than in Daily games, from my observation and experience... (whenever I've been refunded rating points from opponents cheating, it always serms to be from those two levels; hardly ever Daily.)

And if I am not mistaken engine use is permitted in Unrated Daily Chess provided you inform your opponent of your possible engine use.

Cheating is exactly why i quit playing chess online.

Eh, I agree it is a bit annoying, but the way I look at it is they are not improving and just showed me how to beat up on my own ideas so I can make them more bulletproof for when I play it OTB.  It is usually pretty easy to see when it happens.  Learn from it, report it, move on ... I usually get my rating points back within a couple weeks.

What I find hilarious is when I see someone I know is sub-1200 OTB (in any time control) with a 2200+ rating online.  And people wonder why online ratings are never taken seriously.

I do not let it discourage me from playing online.  I use online as a training ground for my OTB play.  If I ever got to the point where I was playing online for money, that might be a different story.

Okay.

Its a world of difference between OTB an online.  OTB i am around normal chess players.

This is very true.  I can count on one hand the number of times I have heard someone ask "How long until I become a GM?" Or "How can I improve from the 600-level?" at real clubs events and tournaments.  It is almost every other forum post online ....

You NEVER see someone blunder and walk away. Known as stalling online.

I recently saw this in an OTB tournament meh

The player was still walking around the room but was just letting the clock run.

It happened to me around 30 years ago!

I had mate in 1.   My opponent had around 1 hour and 15 minutes remaining and I had around 7 minutes remaining (I am legendary for these extreme time disadvantageshappy).  After my opponent stalled for what I would say was around 35 minutes I complained to a tournament director but they could not force him to move or resign.

So then I determined I had enough time to go grab a sandwich from my car and return to the board within 5 minutes.  So I got my sandwich in time, ate my entire sandwich and finally with around less than 5 minutes remaining he moved.

NervesofButter plays otb, which is far more credible that online. And one account doesn’t tell the whole story….

Yes, it is true that online is vastly different then OTB. However, i can’t get out and play OTB so, I’m left with the online option. I’ve had very very few games overturned due to cheating. (No I’m not cheating.) Perhaps due to my low rating. You wouldn’t need to cheat to beat me! I have a few that i play regularly and I’m grateful that they are honest people, there are many of them still today regardless of what some will say. I play 99% daily games because the fast time controls annoy me and i need more time to screw up. To each his or her own, they both have positive and negative aspects. I’d say try it out and make up your own mind and more power to you which ever you decide.

I play a lot of daily chess, and in my mediocre daily rating range (approx. 1500) I don't feel there is a lot of cheating since most cheaters drive their rating up really quickly.  I tend to play in tournaments where there is a rating cap and a minimum number of games requirement that filter out the people who go 100-0 and set off red flags.  While there are a number of accounts that get closed for fair play violations, I tend to win far more games (and rating points) by time outs than I lose to accounts that subsequently get closed for fair play.

In the end the the stakes are non-existent and I recommend not worrying about your on-line rating that much. It will find its correct ballpark level over time.  The advantage of daily chess is being able to play for a few minutes here and there throughout the day when you have spare time.  I don't worry too much about whether my opponent is cheating or not.  Based on the post game reviews, most of my opponents make significant blunders even in games I lose, and I fail to capitalize on them.

I am usually taking almost all my time in live (online or onsite) classical game,

but paradoxically I often hate waiting for days in Daily game.

mainly did not like the tension that run very long (days/ weeks / even months) in Daily

IMHO

* Playing 45_45 or 60_30 or 90_30 is ala eating banquet, or at least 45_15 or 60_10

due its luxury and quality of food there.

** While playing fast game is ala eating junk-food: fun, addictive, but not too healthy even more if you did that only on regular bases.

*** Any long game but with zero increment, is a spoiled from a supposed to be luxury banquet.because often you need to rush finished a beautiful strategic game into time scramble luck / gamble in the end.

eg. I would rather play 45_10 instead of 60_0 Game might be ended in total same 2 hours, but with different mindset/ psychology. thanks to even just 10s increment.

*** Playing correspondence is ala: you don't have time for regular banquet party, but you still order healthy food for your daily menu at home.
