Difference between IM and GM

Hey there!

I was just wondering why some IM haven’t become GM even though they practice the same amount of time and started around the same time?

What’s the difference and why can’t some IM, NM ect. Achieve GM title?

When you're a kid you get smarter and better (at pretty much everything) every day.

When you're an adult it doesn't work like that... so it's often hard for kids to understand that it's possible for someone to practice and work hard but not improve... but that's how it works.

Because everyone isn't equal despite what some people living in fantasy land say. Everyone doesn't have the exact same chess rating. Everyone can't lift the same maximum weight. Everyone can't run the same speed. Everyone can't create the same art or invent or build or create the same, etc. And some chess players are just better than others.

Yeah, some bodies are better for running, and some for swimming.

And then even among runners, some bodies are better for long distance and some for short distance. It doesn't matter how much you work, there's a limit for your type of body.

The brain is part of the body. Some people are better suited for chess but they might be less-good at shogi or go or whatever else.

Of course everyone starts as a terrible beginner, and a ridiculous amount of hard work can make almost anyone improve a huge amount... but not everyone can be IM or GM.

Ghost of llama,

how long has you been playing?

I became interested in chess about 20 years ago.
