Differences in the positions that come from Vote chess games X Live Games

I like a lot vote chess games. After a discussion with some partners I started to think that in vote chess, usually, the "quieters" moves (the "positional ones")are less played than in live chess. In my opinion it seems that the moves that get more "tactical actions" are the most usually voted for.

When I study GM's games I see a lot of "quiet and positional games".

I would like to know if you agree that vote has a difference stance and, if so, why. Also would like to discuss if the  good "vote chess player" is somewaht different from the good "live chess player".

I think an 1800 live OTB (over the board) player should be able to win by a higher percentage against a1800 VC player.  No Data Base, no sleeping on it, just sit across the board and play. Most really good OTB players only do (if at all) Vote Chess as a side hobby, but people like me who are trying to re-learn the game and have limited time, find it to be very helpful.

In a live game you can practice the art of sacrifice but you can't get away with that with them studying the board for 2 or 3 day. Just my first thoughts…what do you want, I took a sleeping pill…..night.

And the difference between the whole game quality (comparing a top votings chess team against a good live player.More Db use in vote chess and based in the facility that the more tactically moves is voted in vote chess, the games will show difference nuances.AS there is known nuances between the playing stile of the correspondence chess champion nad the live chess champion...

I think people are usually less patient when it comes to Vote Chess. Look at the below position taken from a real VC game. I played as White and I was sure our best move was 33.Ra7. My chess engine disagrees with me and wants to play 33.Kf1 and there are moves it likes more than Ra7 (e.g. f4).

Do you know why I wanted to play 33.Ra7? I had two reasons. Firstly, to give Black an opportunity to blunder the game away by exchanging the rooks. If Black doesn`t play 33.Ra7 Rxa7 they could really lose the a-pawn (33.Ra7 Rc8 34.Rxa5? or 34.Bxa5?) but White would make a big mistake by taking the pawn! Black`s rook would control the c-file and the position is drawish after 34.Rxa5 Rc3 although White is better before 33.Ra7. Consequently, Black should play 33.Ra7 Rc8. What was my plan then? Well, I wanted to play 34.Rc7. And again, if Black exchanges the rooks they will lose. Their best response is 34...Ra8. And I was going to repeat the Ra7-Rc7 maneuver twice which brings me to my second reason - psychological warfare. A good player can see White is better on move 33. But when White repeats a position twice it looks like they have no idea what to play. It is very common that the winning side makes an inferior move in such positions just to avoid the draw. If we had repeated the position twice we`d have played a move that was our real plan (f4 or g4) and our opponent would likely believe we made an inferior move.

Now, our opponent made a mistake and played 33.Ra7 Rxa7 and lost (see the full game below). We were lucky that my teammates were patient and willing to waste so many days by following my idea but not all the teams I am a member of (and I bet you know what team I am speaking ofLaughing) are so patient. Their members doesn`t like playing moves that "don`t do something", e.g. those quiet positional moves you wrote about. I believe I will post a game soon that will show it. And it often happens that moves that "do something" are bad and the team may lose a game.

But why is it that so many people are impatient when it comes to Vote Chess? If you play OTB or CC (Online Chess here) your move is made when you submit it and you don`t have to wait. Consequently, the above maneuver would take a while OTB (although it is indeed possible Black would use up some time to figure out what is going on). It would likely take about a week in Online Chess (3 days/move) but it would take 24 days in VC (3 days/move).

I understood your point Boletus. But let me put another.

I am a Sicilian player against 1.e4.In 50 or more online or live games I never played against the wing gambit. In vote chess I've played against it at leat 4 times. It seems that, differently of "individual chess", in vote chess nobody wnats to draw...And, almost never, people play "quieter" openings in vote.(I agree with Keighley)

@Keighley and 100%

The psychological advantage wasn`t the only reason, was it? But it isn`t good to underestimate it. Please remember I always read our opponent`s comments when a VC game is over which is a unique way to know what they thought of this or that move. I could give you quite a few examples of this psychological warfare. Just look at this game (White offered draw on move 29).

But my point is that people are often very impatient when it comes to Vote Chess. They prefer sometimes dubious tactical moves over solid positional ones. If there seem to be two possible attacks players will too often prefer the quicker one although it is worse. I am following a few VC games (I am playing some of them) but since they aren`t over I can`t speak of them here. As soon as the first of them is finished I`ll post it here.

OK, I am sorry I didn`t know you actually didn`t want FVF members to discuss here. As a matter of fact, I will likely meet your preference soon.

But I admit I don`t quite understand your note in the group:"Hello guys. After thinking about that statement by Boletus that, usually, we don't like to play "quiet moves" I deviced a small theory and opened a topic in the general foruns: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/differences-in-the-positions-that-come-from-vote-chess-games-x-live-games.Colaborate if you want ". (emphasis mine) It doesn`t sound like you didn`t want FVF members (or just me?) to write anything in this forum, does it? I don`t usually write in public forums but I thought I should or at least could here ... Be that as it may, I won`t anymore. Wink

If you are lucky enough to play on a  disciplined vote chess team which discusses and analyzes each move to sometimes several pages you will see they are willing to set these psychological traps and play positionally.

Such a team will only do a tactic or combination or sacrifice when it works.

If you are on such a team you will learn a lot--it would be like a free very strong tutor.

ponz you are so right my groups are both like that :-)

Offcourse that I wanted everybody, FVF and no FVF discussing and enjoying.I was just justifying why I had put this in the general forun, to discuss in a greater scope.

Sorry if I was mysunderstood Boletus but I wnated your participation very much. And this is being a very good one!
