I wouldn't dare play an OTB rated tournament sober. I take adderall or vyvanse before the tournament (I'm ADD, it's prescription) and I usually get a little bit of "herbal medicine" in my car in between rounds. (it's legal in my state) The former helps my focus tremendously, and dampens my emotions. The latter helps with patience and creativity. Too much herbal medicine has its consequences though, especially when you realize you have spent 40 of your 120 minutes, still in the opening looking for "novelties."

As a scientist, two things are obvious
1) alcoholic drinks decrease brain performance
2) alcohol drinks may tend to relax a person and help him be more aggressive.
Consequently, it seems to me that having a drink may help those who get so tense they don't see the board as well or avoid taking risks when perfectly sober.
That evaluation is simply a hypothesis - the beginning of the scientific method not a conclusion based on it.

I remember playing an opponent about 400 points higher than me. In a very tense game. Was G/90 if I recall.
At one point during my move, I am analyzing the position, my opponent gets up and leaves the room. I figured he just went to the rest room or something.
So I make my move and hit my clock.
And the guy doesn't come back for a while.
After about 25 minutes he finally returns, with a Starbucks coffee!!
I was insulted he would take me so casually!!
