Do U Think, Chess Is More About: Common Sense?

I consider myself an above average chess player, don't let my rating fool u; yet & still, all this talk about: Strategies & tactics, etc..., I've come 2 realize that: As n life, chess, being successful, is more about having: COMMON SENSE!; the ability 2 make the better decisions (moves).  We sometimes make things, harder than they r.  Any1, can beat any1 n a game of chess, @ any time; no 1 is perfect (or n this case, goes undefeated).  Depending on what frame of mind u r n, @ the time of that game (or moment), your decisions (moves) r either offensive or defensive (initiating or preventing).  Chess offers no excuses 2 its rules.  N order 2 win consistenly, become a better player, we must, as individuals, use the Power, of our: COMMON SENSE!  Your thoughts r appreciated!

It's common sense to have a strategy and look for tactics.

 Exactly; especially about chess!

No. Common sense is overrated in  life (it's usually just an excuse to believe things that are wrong) and it's *especially* bad in chess. Chess is way too hard and complicated to just rely on "well, this seems about right."

Couldn't agree more. See this thread on intuition: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/so-about-intuition-how-does-it-feel?lc=1#last_comment

As far as chess is concerned they can be considered synonyms. What passes for common sense is actually the result of hundreds or thousands of hours of study.

I disagree. Common sense is 2 vague a concept n itself. I, 4 1, don't think it even xists @ all. I'm not sure I get what u r talking about. & also I have a strong 10dency to distrust any1 who bgins their post with "I'm a good player."

KyleJRM: U say COMMON SENSE is overated n life, & it gives u an excuse 2 believe something is wrong; & its bad n chess... Cmon man!  COMMON SENSE is a skill; its not belief, but knowing something is wrong.  N chess, a lack of common sense, leads 2 blunders/ terrible plays, that cost u the game; or as n life, even more.  As I've said: COMMON SENSE is a skill/power (re-read my post), that leads 2 better desicion making.  There r times n chess/life when we knowingly (not believe) make the wrong move.  This is a lack of COMMON SENSE.

& NickYoung5: U gave a thread about intuition, well, COMMON SENSE, is a form of, another way 2 describe COMMON SENSE.  As 4 hours of study 2 develop it, I'll say: There is knowledge that can't b learnt n any school, meaning, there r people who r successful n life (on many levels), who never finished high school.  There r chess players, who may not have the so-called 'knowledge' (hours of study, as u put it) of the game, but they r incredible!  This ability, involves COMMON SENSE; knowing nothing but, the rules of the game, how the pieces move, & the game's objective: Checkmate u; not let u checkmate me.  COMMON SENSE, is 1 of our primary forms of knowlegde; as an individual n life, & chess player.

There is nothing 'vague' about making the better descision (COMMON SENSE); some (maybe u) try 2 conceptualize, about knowingly, not doing the right thing; making the better move.  This is a lack of COMMON SENSE; this is what I'm talking about; the ability 2 use our COMMON SENSE, 2 help us become better chess players (do u get it now?).  I strongly distrust any1 (u), who misquotes people n their posts.

Or at least it's not that common.

Common sense is a fallacy, there is no such thing. What's common sense to you, won't be to me if I've never had the experience before. This is why I believe that common sense isn't very valuable in chess. If you haven't been in the position before, you don't have the "common sense" to know the solution.

Don't believe me, take this example...When you are a little kid, you don't know that when the stove is on it's hot right, but to adults it's common sense. You have to learn something for it to become your own personal common sense.

Ur'e saying that: I have 2 bump my head 2 learn something; experience things 4 myself.  Not true!  Take this example: the child sees, an adult burn themselves on a hot stove (the adult, not knowing it was hot), but this is a mistake; it is not 2 say that, the adult who burned themself, doesn't have COMMON SENSE, but where was it when that move (burning hand) was made?  We make mistakes, when our COMMON SENSE isn't functioning properly, (caught slipping) so n the future, that child, who seen the adult burn themself, has the COMMON SENSE, now knows, 2 make sure the stove isn't hot b4 touching it.  Yet, later on n life, that same child, may touch a hot stove; make a mistake, bad move.  COMMON SENSE is very real.  Do u have 2 go 2 jail, personally, 2 learn that, its not a place u want 2 b?; or have u developed, within your life, the COMMON SENSE, not 2 do anything, make bad moves that will land u n jail, or cost u the game.  COMMON SENSE is very valuable n chess.

 Right! :)

If you had common sense, you wouldn't be playing chess in the first place. (Although you seem to have preserved enough of it to not be very good in it.)

Heh, when a new guy walks in my club and before playing talks about how good he is, I get the feeling I can beat him giving odds of two rooks.

When someone walks in saying they're rusty and not very good and are a bad player anyway, I get the feeling I'm about to play a master and I don't pull any punches.

One thing playing chess for awhile teaches anyone is humility in the game.

Me stating, being an above average player, is n reference 2 how I feel about my chess playing abilities.  Has nothing 2 do with learning humility.  U & fezzik missed the boat, on this post.  This post is a general, open question, regarding, the use of common sense, n application 2 chess.  I've said never mind my rating, because, as fezzik says, it means nothing.  This post is 2 shed light on how myself & others lose games, by not making better decisions.  It's a difference when some1 beats u, or u beat yourself (with dumb moves).

Whatever.  U should have the common sense & courtesy 2 keep your mouth closed.  U say I'm not good, but I AM 1000% CERTAIN, I can beat u!  Get your mind right; or get it on your left sleeve.

I guess that would leave us with, this topic: Applying that COMMON SENSE, 2 chess.  Maybe then, they'll b able 2 beat u.
