I would say:
" Writing plays and critical articles is a foolish expedient for making arrogant and opinionated people believe they are doing something very clever when they are only wasting their time.”

You say touché when someone has returned the barb or insult to you not when you do it. Why are there comment boards? So arrogant people to whom no one will listen can say something.

richie_and_oprah - how can it be '100% accurate' when it assumes a) idleness, b) that all chess players believe they is doing something clever and c) that a 'waste of time' is anything but subjective?
I'd be intrigued to learn how you reached the conclusion that I took it personally or was hurt by it. I haven't eluded to either.
