Do you consider chess to be a sport?

Yes, definitely. It requires skill, intelligence, movement and an amazing ability to not per for at least twelve hours at a time. Pure sportsmanship if you ask me.

Of course I consider it a sport! Sport is loosely defined as a form of entertainment, and battles, wars, duels, were all considered sport at one point in time. I see chess as a strategic battle, a duel between two people (or yourself :p), so I consider chess a sport! :)

I consider a square to be a circle. A circle is loosely defined as a shape or something you can draw or look at, so like, yeah.

Oh my goodness! I didn't realize this was a debate on whether chess IS a sport or ISN'T a sport. I mistakenly thought that people were being asked their personal opinions on whether they consider it a sport or not...

It's not clear that chess can be adequately classified as being "purely mental", first off.

Aside from that: you have yet to address the point about evolving word meanings that at least I (if not others) have brought up regarding the term "sport" and how chess relates to it.

Seems perfectly clear to me; not sure what your confusion is.

There's no point about evolving word meanings here at all. As I said before: consult any reputable dictionary.

Isn't it clear that Savage isn't going to listen to anything any of you are going to say?

He's seeming to be the type of person to not accept someone's answer because it doesn't exactly correlate with his own opinion. Whateva ~

It's a game, but games can be competitive. That's a mentality that is more common among my generation I think. It'll be funny when we're old and have grandkids... maybe they'll have networks that show starcraft and smash bros. tournaments.

Chess is a sport. why is poker on a sports channel like ESPN???

Avatar of AlCzervik

That's not a valid comparison. Obviously, there are people willing to watch poker on tv. Not too many are interested in seeing chess on tv. There are how many hundreds of cable channels? Still no chess channel that I'm aware of.

Plus, ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network.

So if chess is considered a sport, then a job interview for arguments sake, a fireman job, is a sport aswell , or any job interview involving 2 or more people for one goal, position, and out come... to out witt the compition and win the position... then everything in life can be viewed as a spot... finishing the exam first, getting your crushes phone number, landing the highest paid job, ...for keeps and not for fun and games.. then what is considered a game is this way of thinking?
