And can you recommend me some openings I should play for white and black.(You can go to Game Explorer and type my name there and see what I have played)I currently play Giuoco Piannissimo as white and Petrov's defense as black. Thanks a lot sir!

Dear MDL4, I think your openings are fine. Study some master games about it and you will play them even better!

Dear mister Turzo,

Currently I am in a rut. I find it very difficult to progress in chess. Currently this is my 3rd year of serious playing chess. Normally I play once a week in a chess club and I play some chess games daily (mostly Online 3 days chess and 10 minute rapid games) but somehow I keep staggering in the 1200-1400 range of rating and defeating a 1500 is rare for me.

Can you advise me how to get to the next rating plateau? Is it my choice of opening repertoire or do I repeat my mistakes?

The openings I play are btw: White: e4 going into King's Gambit, Alapin Sicilian, Two knights french and two knights caro kann. Against Scandinavian I play as classicaly as possible. For black I play Scandinavian Qd6 lines and Modern benoni against d4.

Dear MonkeyH,

Every opening is good if you know it well. I think you repeat your mistakes.

I suggest you to do daily 20 minutes from a puzzle book or using tactics trainer on chess.com. If you have an endgame book, then start to study endgames at least once a week. Once a week analyse your long time control games, use at least 30 minutes for a game weekly. I suggest you to replay weekly 2-3 analysed games about your openings. Find games where the full game is annotated with words.

I wish you the best to reach your goals!

I too am a student I too currently have my exams. After my exams I will get a lot of time. A two months time as my vacation. And I'll soon have a tournaments of my school. Is it possible for me to win a state level tournament? Last year when I attended it I was 1234 rated. Now I am 1330. Is it possible for me to win it?

Hello IM attilaturzo

I am a 14 year old (Almost 15) with a rating of almost 1700.

I am in high school with limited study time (Though if I work hard I can get about 2 hours a day in)

I study openings daily and middlegames, and plan to do endgames when I finish the middlegame books I am on (My system, chess praxis - starting these next week)

I study openings - Semi Slav, Kings gambit and Sicilian Najdorf (I love complex positions where you can fight to win)

However, the books can be rather theoretical though full of quality information (Like the ones from Quality chess, the GM repituare)

I have a goal of making 2000 this year, but can only do maybe 6-8 tournaments.

Do you think I can make it?

Should I change anything in my training plan? (Openings - books/videos +middlegame books/videos and endgames less often to replace one when I finish something major)

Thanks - logozar

Dear logozar,

I think you can reach 2000 this year. I think you need to analyze at least 1 of your games weekly in 30-60 minutes. Also Analyse all of your tournament games for 30-60 minutes. Study tactics daily at least 20 minutes!

I wish you the best to reach your goal!

When I was rated 1234 in rapid, I played a state level tournament (standard 45+10 games by SGFI) but now l am 1330. Is it possible for me to win the state level tournament in November this year?

Yes. I think you can win the tournament. Give your best to reach your goal!

Dear omaridepractice,

I suggest you to start to play at least one 30 minutes per player or longer game and then use 30-60 minutes to analyse the game. Start to study endgames, middlegames and openings weekly at least 60 minutes.

I wish you the best to progress and reach your chess goals!

Mr. Turzo

I am currently rated 2000 OTB and I need to study endgames.  I would like to know which endgames would be most important to study.  For example, same colored bishop endgames or rook endgames.  Thank you very much

How does one go from a 2000 in blitz to 2500? Also does a blitz rating reflect a classical rating at all?

This question is similar to logozar's but slightly bit more ambitious. I am currently a 1600 player who really wants to improve in chess. Problem is, I only have 2 years before I am headed off to college. :(  So, do you think studying intensely for 200 hrs and playing in 80 rated games is enough to propel me to 2200(NM status)? Personally, I think I am more of an 1800 as I draw with 1800-1900s quite often so yeah plz give me your opinion on if this is a realistic goal!

Dear FishPat287,

I think if you are on a 1800 level then to reach 2200 in 2 years is possible. 200 point per year gain. I think need to play more than 80 games. I suggest at least 60 games per year and 1 hour study per day.

I wish you the best to reach your goal!

Dear MDassassin08, I suggest you to develop all chess skills, opening, middlegame and endgame knowledge. Focusing on tactics and playing with higher rated opponents most of the game.

High rated blitz players most of the time also good in classical chess.

I wish you the best to reach 2500!

Dear ErnstStavroBlofeld1,

I suggest you to study this book:

100 Endgames You Must Know: Vital Lessons for Every Chess Player

If you studied it deeply and still want to study more then I suggest you to focus on rook endgame.

I wish you the best for mastering endgames and reaching your goals!

Would you suggest a black repertoire/opening book against 1.d4 for a tactical player rated around 1800? Never played 1.d4 and never studied any of the responses in too much detail.

DragonPhoenixSlayer

How high rated do you think a player can get from simply not blundering

Dear Patzer8000,

I suggest you this book:

King's Indian: A Complete Black Repertoire

I think this book was born from the heart of the author, who shared his experiences in the book in a good way. The beginning of each chapter he gives a brief explanation of the variation and the analyze the lines deeply. I suggest first to study just the main lines and when you have time then start to read the sublines and when you play a game with this opening refer to the book and add new knowledge to your repertoire.

I wish you the best to improve your opening repertoire against 1.d4!
