Hi Sir!
Do you have a chess question? International Master Attila Turzo answers

As I'm a Student I don't have much time to practice chess as our school is having exams now.My mother keeps telling me to study. What should I do?

And can you recommend me some openings I should play for white and black.(You can go to Game Explorer and type my name there and see what I have played)I currently play Giuoco Piannissimo as white and Petrov's defense as black. Thanks a lot sir!

Dear Camurcu,
I suggest you to play the London system with white or play systems with Bg2 to get a safe king position our of the opening.
Against 1.e4 I suggest you to play the Scandinavian defense with 2..Qxd5 3..Qd6 variations.
Against 1.d4, c4, Nf3 I suggest you to play the Tarrasch defense.
I wish you nice games!

Dear mister Turzo,
Currently I am in a rut. I find it very difficult to progress in chess. Currently this is my 3rd year of serious playing chess. Normally I play once a week in a chess club and I play some chess games daily (mostly Online 3 days chess and 10 minute rapid games) but somehow I keep staggering in the 1200-1400 range of rating and defeating a 1500 is rare for me.
Can you advise me how to get to the next rating plateau? Is it my choice of opening repertoire or do I repeat my mistakes?
The openings I play are btw: White: e4 going into King's Gambit, Alapin Sicilian, Two knights french and two knights caro kann. Against Scandinavian I play as classicaly as possible. For black I play Scandinavian Qd6 lines and Modern benoni against d4.

Hello IM attilaturzo
I am a 14 year old (Almost 15) with a rating of almost 1700.
I am in high school with limited study time (Though if I work hard I can get about 2 hours a day in)
I study openings daily and middlegames, and plan to do endgames when I finish the middlegame books I am on (My system, chess praxis - starting these next week)
I study openings - Semi Slav, Kings gambit and Sicilian Najdorf (I love complex positions where you can fight to win)
However, the books can be rather theoretical though full of quality information (Like the ones from Quality chess, the GM repituare)
I have a goal of making 2000 this year, but can only do maybe 6-8 tournaments.
Do you think I can make it?
Should I change anything in my training plan? (Openings - books/videos +middlegame books/videos and endgames less often to replace one when I finish something major)
Thanks - logozar

What do you think of my study plan?
TACTICS
45 min to 1hr on chesstempo. First, I do standard (not timed). I have to get 5 tactics right in a row. If I fail one, I have to start over all 5 tactics. Once I get all 5 tactics in a row correct, I move to mixed mode (Tactics could be to win, not lose, or just to get a good position. Also, if you spend more than 5 min you rating is affected by time). I again have to do 5 tactics in a row correct. If I succeed, then I have to do blitz (blitz is like chess.com's tactic trainer, time impacts your rating). 5 tactics in a row. If I finish before 45 min - 1hr I repeat the process.
OPENING
30 min of opening study w/ chessgames.com database + arena + books sometimes.
MIDDLEGAME
I use chessgames.com's GUESS THE MOVE feature, and practice about 30 min.
ENDGAME
I use chessgames.com again to look up endgames, learn from SILMAN"S COMPLETE ENDGAME COURSE, do tactics in Lazlo Polgar's CHESS ENDGAMES BOOK, and do one endgame chess mentor every day. 30 min study, 30 min solving tactics.
CHESSBOOKS
Yusupov's BUILD UP YOUR CHESS 1 one chapter every day. HOW TO REASSESS YOUR CHESS 3RD EDITION 30 min.
GAMES
A couple blitz games per day, one 25|0 game every two days, OTB games about 5 tournaments a year (sometimes more).
My goal is to reach master level or close to master level at the end of 2016.
Your plan is great. I would add 1 more thing. Please analyzse your 25 minutes games at least 30 minutes per game. I would also suggest to check the openings of your blitz games. Compare to the games which you want to follow. I wish you the best to reafh your goal at the end of 2016!
thx

Can you explain how to play against an unconventional opening? For example, White moves a pawn one space or moves a side pawn or waits a long time to move his center pawns. I can't seem to get a good Sicilian Dragon or Sicilian anything if they don't "play right"!
Der Prince_Aegon,
I suggest you to develop your dragon bishop and gain control in the center. 1...c5 2...Nc6 3...g6 4...Bg7 5...e5 6...Nge7 7...0-0 and then you can start to attack with d5 in the center or with f5 in the kingside.
I wish you many nice games and confident in the opening!
Attila

When I was rated 1234 in rapid, I played a state level tournament (standard 45+10 games by SGFI) but now l am 1330. Is it possible for me to win the state level tournament in November this year?

IM Attila, why do you think Magnus Carlsen is/was a better player than both Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov?
Dear caezx,
Magnus is the best in the present and he is very young, still improving. I believe he can be the best player if we compare with other masters.
I wish you to be as good as Magnus Carlsen!

Dear DragonPhoenixSlayer ,
You should try to keep the queens on the board with 23..Be6. Without queens the white bishop and rook is more active and the black a-pawns is a good target.

How to build up my repertorie?
Dear Harish73,
I suggest you to study lot of master games and when you find a game where you like to opening and the resulting middlegame, then you start to work on that opening. Find other master games from that opening and start to save games you like into a database. I think very helpfull can be if you have books about the opening you choose or you watch videos. It helps you to learn the main patterns.

Which youtube channel you would recommend to improve chess??
Dear badakjiladi, I suggest you to review several channels and choose which you like most. I do not watch youtube chess channels, so I can not recommend one.

Dear Desperado, White should wait with e4 and need to develop with Nf3 and castle. e4 would help black, because he has a development advantage and he could start to open the position for his better developed pieces.

I need help with these, so please read it and then answer in that forum post. Please, I really need help with it.
Dear IRosed,
I suggest you to use the tactics trainer, play 30 minutes games, analyse all of your games at your own and with a stronger friend. Ask help for that here on the forum too. Read articles on chess.com. I wish you the best to reach your goals!
