Do you need to play bullet chess?

Hello everyone. I was wondering if bullet chess is a necessary category that I should practice. Lots of coaches say that playing bullet does not help. Some even consider it as a video game! Share your thoughts in the comments bellow.

Bullet is probably the worst time control you could play. It is certainly not something you should practice, and my advice would be to play bullet about once a week for a couple of games.

My advice would be to completely ignore bullet and NEVER play it if you want to improve. It's useless and stops you from calculating...

Ok, Thanks!

It really depends on your goal in chess. If your goal is to find success in long time control tournaments, then bullet chess isn't the best idea. You should instead spend your time on openings and tactics. However, if you just want to have fun and enjoy fast paced games either OTB or online, then I see no reason to play some bullet once in a while happy.png

Bullet is enjoyable, addictive and the safest version of online chess.

It works more on memory than calculating.

I don't think bullet is chess at all. It requires a completely different skill set than OTB chess, and if you goal is to improve OTB than you should avoid bullet completely. My bullet rating here is over 900 points higher than my national rating, which speaks for how unrelated it is to regular chess, and how much of your strength is derived from non-chess factors (mousespeed, internet connection, reflexes, etc.).

play slower time controls to improve your chess. people who has high bullet ratings will always disagree

Then you haven't played tournament chess in years and the comparison is pointless.

Correct. But even if I did play regularly I would still be 500+ points higher rated in bullet than OTB.
