Albert's first reply shows that the birthday is not May or June (if it were either of these, then the birthday might have been identifiable from the day alone, so he could not be sure that Bernard did not know it).

Bernard's reply shows that the day is not the 14th, or he would not have enough information.

Albert has 4 choices for months.  Let's narrow it down...

Since he states that Bernard "doesn't know" the Birthday, (a completely bald assertion, by the way) that eliminates the days of 19 and 18, and, by implication, the months of May and June.  Since there is only one birthday choice for each of those days.

 

Thus, Bernard has only 4 remaining choices for days -- 14, 15, 16, 17.  Let's narrow it down again, quickly...

16 is the only day that doesn't have a "double occurrence," (14, 15, or 17 all have two choices, thus leaving the choice of day uncertain), so Bernard's choice must be the 16th, and it must also be July, as a result of the previous bald assertion described above.


In a nutshell, the language gives you a head-fake, and if you understand the slippery logic, it makes you think you are a genius ??  Don't believe it.

 

This word problem (and the silly banter in which is in embedded) is deliberately designed to hide the solution, which is ultimately based on not one, but two bald assertions. QED.

Undoubtedly, there's some Boolean Algebra representation for this nutty word play. That's probably why it appeals to eccentric chessplayers, and math geeks.


IF they told you directly -- "It's NOT May or June, NOT 18 or 19, and NOT 14, 15, or 17," THEN the answer jumps right out at you.  It's July 16, by default.


Neat Trick, but who needs the headache ?  Pass me an aspirin.  Smile

Yes. Chess has a finite amount of moves. Eventually every move will be found by a super computer through calculation.
