In fact, if my opponent said it with sincerity, I will feel happy.

Lets look at it this way, may have been already covered in this thread but not as direct as this, There are very few rude dedicated chess players, this group is most likely to help other players then be rude! On the other hand you may look at the drive by chess players that have free time on there hands and thought it will be fun to dabble in chess for a while. If I may give you a true example, real chess player? Here goes True story, forgive me gang!
Because I travel so much in my career this happened. I was flying civilian airlines, flying couch ( least expensive), I was already seated before take off and this very well dressed genteman sat down next to me. I thought to myself, probably first class was all filled.
Him: How are you?
me: Fine thanks.
Him: Hope I wake up when we get there.
Me: I will wake you up when we get there if you do not!
Him: I appreciate that
Me: By the way is that a chess players pin you are wearing on your lapel?
Him: Why yes! Are you a chess player as well?
Well we talked the rest of the flight, he probably was a wealthy white collar person, I am blue collar, made no difference we were chess players belonging to that special fraternity/sorority life chess players!
Luckily for you guys no chess board was around, otherwise you would have parted as blood enemies instead

I've found the community to be very friendly as long as you are tactful, respectful, and humble. Egos tend to butt heads, and there are many egos activated in a cerebral game like chess... just a guess.
