Azukikuru, perhaps you and stevedavenati may want to adjourn to a more fitting forum to air your present views since I'm not sure it's helping our present predicament in trying to extinguish an, in my opinion, irrelevant topic. On a side note though, I dream of visiting your country to learn a thing or two from the great Ari Vatanen.

Yes, this is a good idea. Allow me to post one last message to redirect the discussion, which has moved way beyond Frendu and his plight anyway. And thanks for your comment - coincidentally, my first name is Ari, too!

I'm afraid I've been haunted by the issue of participation rates ever since I did my little study, which I posted here (anyone who wants to can continue the discussion there). I followed up by reading some articles that seemed to confirm my point with other sets of data. Even if some people may find it hard to believe, I honestly only wanted to find logically sound arguments for either side of the issue; I know that this interpretation of the data at hand cannot prove anything conclusively, so I wanted to hear what was "wrong" with the reasoning, since the currently fashionable excuses (participation rates, oppression) obviously were not logically viable.

Stevedavenati, your link in post #450 points to an interesting article, but I'm afraid it refers to studies that are 15 years old as far as participation rates are concerned. The articles that I mentioned above were written ten years later and included the history of discussion until then. What's worse, your article simply ignores a 35-point inter-gender difference as "not significant". The comments, however, were an interesting read. Comment #4 brings up a good point that I had not previously considered, and it may be viable if it can be statistically confirmed. Also, I'd like to direct your attention to comment #40 just for kicks. To conclude, I'd like to thank you for bringing this to my attention, and I'd like to apologize for my lack of interest in replying to your other post - I simply don't see that discussion as fruitful.

Frendu, you may be a troll, but the thread you started inadvertently evolved into something that satisfied my intellectual curiosity. As far as I'm concerned, the joke's on you.

You share first names with the legend himself. Do you, by any chance, know a thing or two about rallying since you guys seem to be wizards in that area?

I happen to be a cheerleader and one of the most popular girls at my school. Guys at my school think it's hot to see a girl playing a game. ANY game. They especially like girls playing video games. Since I like to dress to impress all the time, I think guys like it better when I'm playing. I don't know if you can call me beautiful, but I know the guys at my school like me, so yeah.

In many languages the equivalent of the Queen is not "female", but rather "male", which then makes the game even more sexist. :-)

Hey Crazy you must be a woman--tell them how it feels to be thought about sexually, while trying to compete as an equal chess player. Some people are so Arrogant and self centered, without thought to the feelings of others.

RC, have you ever been to a scholastic chess tournament?  The pre-adolescent sections are about equally male and female. Girls stop playing chess when their cohort males become adolescent.

I kind of doubt that is the reason that girls stop playing chess. this would then apply to all sorts of activity there male and female are in the same club.

I think one aspect is that chess isn't considered cool for a teenager.

chess is a rather hard game. either you loose or you win. you cannot show mercy in a game.  some may find it kind of hard.

I've other clubs drive away young players because they got blamed for losing.  they forget the fun aspect of chess and they never got any attention to how well they played.

we have to acknowledge that even we do not want to be sexist - men and female still want to be treated differently deep down.

In my club we laugh and we allow players to play silly chess whereas in another club they are told not to play silly and be very serious to an extent it gets boring.

the above my be some factors why some stop.

I think this is a good post.

Smile I am bored to think about "female beauties" in chess!! Presentation in internet are not always practical but some time fictitious. This is truth in reality and may be good for spicy joke!! Beauties in chess lies with the best players.

Yes, and sometimes the queen is, too.

I read once about a chess game in which the players were people.  One player's  queen was very desirable to him.  Since she and he were both single, he decided that if he could keep her on the board until the game was over he would ask her for a date.  When a chessman was captured the person representing that piece could leave, so he did not want his queen leaving!

As the game progressed, his opponent figured out he did not want to lose his queen, so his opponent began to attack the queen every chance possible.

Finally the game was over and he had his chance to ask the beautiful and charming queen for a date, but she answered, "You ran me all over the board and my feet are killing me.  All I want to do is go home and get off my feet."
