They have studied and found chess players memory is much better than average. I do not know if this shows that it improves memory. Or if it shows that people with better memory enjoy chess more.
https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/16/12/2116another study found that dementia may be delayed from chess. But it does not prove that chess makes memory better.
Does Chess Improve Memory
In research I could not find any proof that chess improves memory. But it does have a lot of proven good effects and poor effects. Or is “affects” better in this sentence? This is a difficult word to know when to use.

It's bound to improve memory because chess consists of contextual patterns which consist of very many mutual interassociations. Memory works by association therefore chess can't do other than help improve memory. The difficulty is in proving it, since other factors such as aging also affect it.
I agree Optimissed. It seems the scientific chess community also shares this thought. I assume prevention a dementia even for years is enough evidence for me to casually say it has to improve memory. But I was hoping to find definitive proof. I could not.

Mental activity is one of the components of a lifestyle which improves memory. Provided that Chess doesn't get in the way of the others then yes, it could help.
Chess also improves your ability to sit for long periods of time.
Long hours.... No thanks. I don't play continuously ONLINE. For that reason I don't join Live tournaments.
