Chess can be used to introduce you critical thinking, mot necessarily smarter but allowing your brain to think on a different level.
Chess is a passion, smart or not but thinking sometimes helps
It doesn't make people smarter but I think it does improve your concentration. It takes a lot of willpower to play an hour long game! I also think it improves your overall strategy iq which can transcend to other board games like stratego.

To play chess you don't have to be smart ( you might know how the pieces move and have a rating 200, 300 range ) nothing smart about that anyone can do it.
NOW to play GOOD chess (1800+ rating range) you have to be SMART, INTELLIGENT. Now I'm not going to explain or argue with you why you have to be smart, intelligent, I will just say you have to look for definition what smart is !
Smart or intelligent is not just high IQ where's only kids think that all it takes to be smart. Intelligence is very large area of knowledge and ALSO if you didn't know it includes emotional intelligence, etc... PART of intelligence is MEMORY and to play good chess you MUST have good memory, so therefore people are intelligent, smart who play good chess.

It depends how you treat it. If your one of these grandmasters who spends 15 hours a day doing nothing but chess and not doing anything else, your brain cells will start to die. Playing say, an hour or 2 of chess a day is probably good for strengthening the mind. The emotional toll that tournaments take, however, might not be good.
The inference that good chess players are smart, is terribly weak. But the inference that smart people like puzzles, is far more reasonable. Chess is a beautifully intricate puzzle. Some games pop and sizzle. To even see how amazing some games are, takes an insight and a curiosity. Smart is too subjective a term to use in this context.

Im living proof chess doesnt make you smarter.
I'm sure most Gms have an Is of over 100, but it's not like having an IQ of 130 is a requirement. Hole punching a paper airplane and then trying to figure out where the holes are unfolded is WAY harder than any chess problem lol

I think you're a little misinformed. There are mentally disabled people who have conditions such as autism who excel at chess. That said, their IQ is not 70 or below. That would make Forrest Gump a rocket scientist compared to them. 70 is barely alive lol.
Go to any college campus and you'll easily find a recluse who everyone makes fun of and calls retarded who is, in actuality, just an autistic person with a 140 IQ.
Memory has different aspects as well.
Remembering patterns, combinations, tactics, seeing strategy ahead is also good memory he doesn't need to remember other staff , I mean it does not mean he have perfect memory in everything.
Think about a scientist, musicians who remembers every single aspect in their own "game", but that doesn't mean he must have perfect memory in everything.

Have you done IQ tests in all GMs and you know for fact they have over 100?
