You don't have to play A0, Stockfish, etc. Play with fellow members. Chess.com will arrange games with similar ratings for even matchup.

I'm kind of a miserable person by nature (one of those insufferable 'tortured artist' types), so chess makes me miserable.....but I enjoy its particular kind of misery.

Many people still enjoy biking although there are Harleys. Why can't people enjoy chess with A0, SF around?

The presence of the King and Queen character makes chess attracts more players than any board game. Go, checkers, othello is simply black and white. Chinese Chess have only a King, No queen. Stratego have generals but no Queen.

For the same reason you average club player, and beginner wont play an opening that was "refuted" at an international GM in a game between two 2700 GM's. Somehow...somewhere along the way, us average players somehow got it in our heads that GM games decide our games.
