My girlfriend and I both play chess. I guess the only way it could be seen to make someone more attractive is that it’s associated with intelligence? And some people find intelligence attractive…
If someone is into any hobby, a prospective partner also being interested in it will generally make them more attractive. Beyond that, possibly if the guy thinks that being into chess implies certain other traits about you (intelligence, clear-headedness, patience, etc), then that could also make sense.
I doubt that it would be accurate to say that the majority of men would find a woman more attractive if they played chess.

No, chess doesn't make someone more attractive. What might make someone more attractive would be showing their passion for an interest of theirs (like chess), or displaying their determination to keep trying to improve and compete at higher levels (like chess), or perhaps even revealing intelligence (which chess doesn't really do, but has the stereotype that "smart people play chess" https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmartPeoplePlayChess ).
It isn't chess per se which is attractive, it is how someone interacts with the game which might be attractive (not to mention relatability if the other person shares an interest in chess too).

And you're the female? First thing to ask is do you need to feel more attractive than you already feel? Secondly, well, of course a chess playing male will think he will benefit if you also play chess, so that he stands more chance of a positive response from you. Imo, if this was a real situation, don't take up chess. Take up ..... running.
