does chess really improve your math?

if your answer is yes..give me an example..of yourself or a celebrity.i think it just improves attention..quick thinking..and decipliness..

PrawnEatsPrawn

I'm not sure about decipliness but I used to think that chess improves a person's speeling.

I would say: Yes, chess does improve our math, based on the ability to calculate mathematical equations more efficiently.  Also, 4 me, gives me more confidence, psycologically.

prawneatsprawn and szammies..thanks fo the examples and contributions......but we might 'try'if nt agree..that it improves decipliness..as in composure, calmness and patience..dont you guys agree?

Both chess and math are indicative of a deeper ability to handle abstract concepts. I don't think that one improves the other. Of course you can talk about such things as discipline and calculation, but there are so many activities which do this that it is kind of trivial to talk about chess in particular.

Conquistador

I doubt it.  Calculus is not getting any easier.

ivandah..nice observation..and conquistador?what does chess improve then...a sixth sense?..lol..ps thanks fo the correction..i meant discipliness and not 'decipliness'

There has been considerable research done on this, a google search will reveal. Check out: http://www.quadcitychess.com/benefits_of_chess.html. In general, there seems to be a correlation between teaching chess and improved math performance.

I think it improves concentration, and develops memory. I know I have improved in memorizing things this year with my exams, and I think chess helped.

But dear golly I hope you aren't a discipliness yourself: http://www.definition-of.com/discipliness

Do you mean "discipline?"

I think it improves your ability with mathematical logic, the study of logic is easier for an experienced chess player who has already studied a mathematical notation system (chess notation) and already understands logic, even though the logic is affected by the opponents wishes or character.

Chess also improves spacial analysis, so it could arguably increase combat skills more than math skills :/

Otherwise, no not really, mathematics involves numerical and algebraic calculation, while chess is often an attack plan or strategy.

a "man/woman" - is that like a cross - a he/she maybe?  Wait a minute, my mother was a woman and my father was a man - does that make me a man/woman?  Now I have something else to be freaked out about....

To answer seriously though, chess is about a number of mental processes, one of which is Pattern Recognition - it is not really formulaic on any level we can understand and I would say does not help any branch of maths that we currently use.

The statement man/woman means man or woman, in polite society back in the 1980's it was often respecatable to put woman/man when explaining no differentiation between the sexes, in instances such as job adverts. That is all thanks to the womens lib movement. I think competitive chess often gets accused of lowering the status of female competitors and has for example often offered lower prize stakes for tournaments.

wow...am gettin a 60/40 percent..that i7 a yes/no response from you guys...funny illustrations too...and its makin sense..i mean the real life examples and the explanations. Ps;is that really wat discipliness means? *mmmhm scratchin my head*

Vacuous....a) not all scots are neds just like not all english are wee fannies; b) racial stereotyping is not witty; c) if you are proud to be english then dont fly the "UK" flag, use the english one.

Edit - I notice you changed your post.

fair enough :P I was reffering to pattern recognition and connecting the concept of violence to chess and logic, not intending to be joking about national stereotypes.

__vxD_mAte

should that be "sexual differentiation" instead of "differentiation between the sexes" hehe

either way the point is chess, logic, math and violence, war, conquest, subtlety and intriuge all connect ...

spider vs beetle looks like Queen + King vs King in the case of small beetles.

DubAce

i think math improves your chess.

wishiwonthatone

do you have to be good to learn these things? because I'm horrible and have learned nothing.

....but it's fun Sealed

nonowho

it dosn't improve my math but it does make logic and other brain skils beter

CoolMan4

It doesn't.  I'm great at math and not so hot at chess
