Does Magnus carlsen have talent?

Sort:
pfren

You may notice that Carlsen himself does not think he is not a genius, and his success in chess is mostly a result of effective training- on the contrary, he believes he got so good at chess because he is not very smart, and was "forced" working hard to succeed.

Personally I do not agree completely with a lot of FIDE trainers/ senior trainers who dismiss talent as a myth (I think that the ability to absorb properly the amount of knowledge given to someone is a certain gift), but I do agree that noone can get far enough without proper training, and hard work. No matter how smart a person is, he cannot become a (very) strong player if he is lazy, OR his trainer is lazy. In most cases, the excuse "I cannot go far in chess, because I have no talent" is equivalent to "I think I have better things to do than working hard on chess".

If you prefer fantasy beliefs, buy a unicorn ranch.

bigpoison

Nah, the forum title. Are lawyers lower than a snake's belly?

Would a politician steal the silver off a dead man's eyes?

All the proof you could ever wish for a measly $ 59.60 VAT inclusive, dear mr.learnthegoodmanners.

No, Carlsen obviously got no talent. Everyone can easily become World Champion, they just don't want to.

Wake up everybody no more sleepin in bed
No more backward thinkin time for thinkin ahead
The world has changed so very much
From what it used to be so
there is so much hatred war an' poverty
Wake up all the teachers time to teach a new way
Maybe then they'll listen to whatcha have to say
Cause they're the ones who's coming up and the world is in their hands
when you teach the children teach em the very best you can.

Chorus
The world won't get no better if we just let it be
The world won't get no better we gotta change it yeah, just you and me.

Wake up all the doctors make the ol' people well
They're the ones who suffer an' who catch all the hell
But they don't have so very long before the Judgement Day
So won'tcha make them happy before they pass away.
Wake up all the builders time to build a new land
I know we can do it if we all lend a hand
The only thing we have to do is put it in our mind
Surely things will work out they do it every time.

Paying money proves something?  Weak attempt by a so called IM.

How about if the glove don't fit?  At least give me some of that jive.

pfren

Oh... actually I did not call myself an IM. Others did.

Well, that thing about Magnus (as well as many other IMPORTANT things regarding chess evolution) is one of the main courses at any FIDE seminar for instructors and trainers. Attending a couple of those seminars costed me a good deal of money, so please don't expect me passing that for free... Maybe I would do that on special occasions, but certainly not to a random arrogant woodphuser. Regards.

"Carlsen showed an aptitude for intellectual challenges at a young age: at two years, he could solve 50-piece jigsaw puzzles; at four, he enjoyed assembling Lego sets with instructions intended for children aged 10–14." - Wikipedia. Carlsen is highly talented.

Even if you don't need to be even smart to become a decent player, I think to reach that level you must be some sort of genius, besides doing a ton of work.

That is rather true. However, without the hard work part, nothing is to be achieved. This applies invariably to all great chessplayers, with the possible exclusion of Misha Tal. He is probably the prime example of playing and excelling not against the pieces, but rather against an opponent.

I work hard but am not quite a genius/very talented player, hence why I am stuck around 2100. I think regardless of talent, with hard work and study everyone should be able to get atleast 2000. But that's just a hunch I got.

You can even get higher than that, BUT to reach very high levels you will also need expert guidance and hard work from your coach.

Pfren I think this thread is practially proof that some chess.com posters are idiots- well meaning individuals excluded.  Not entirely sure why you dug it up?  wonder if the OP went away or are merely lurking, waiting for their chance to troll some more.

we could have an opportunity to spread a few quotes about hard work and improvement...

but Idk. I doubt it.  I give this thread 30 minutes TOPS.

FWIW; Magnus seems genuinely unfocused on openings (compared to his peers); so he's more talented at chess than most!
