does "jrobichess" on youtube knows what he is talking about?

hi there,

i've read 3 times on different occasions that "jrobichess" doesn't know chess "AT ALL" and therefore everyone should stay away from his videos (which are pretty well made in my opinion)

my concern is: i'm a beginner and don't know if i should avoid jrobichess to avoid learning wrong ideas or developing bad habits.

the only chess youtube channel i'm watching and love is "chess network" (jerry)

i can't imagin there is a better commentator than jerry out there. he explains every move very clearly... but sadly he hasn't that much videos yet. so i need more other channels i can go to...

i kinda can't stand "kingcrushers" voice/accent and the audio quality is terrible (for watching on a constant basis).

"seanGGodley" seems to be good as well... but too fast for me yet and doesn't explain the moves enough for me.

what is your favorite youtube commentator? and should i stay away from jrobichess? being a beginner he seems competent to me...

MarvsC

hmm...

Tricklev

Stay away from jrobichess, the problem isn't only that he's a beginner that doesn't understand the game. The problem is that he's a beginner that doesn't understand the game (at all) that tries to teach ignorance.

Personally the only one I do sometimes listen to is kingscrusher, even though he sometimes goes on a little to much.

Here is Alexandra Kosteniuk's channel though.

MarvsC

yes, ChessQueen is my friend in youtube and facebook.  You'll love her video presentations.  Kosteniuk, very good promoter of chess.

ChessBlunderer

I learned everything i know about chess from jrobi. Before watching the first video i did not even know how the pieces were set up. That was back in Decemeber 2009.

Thought he does not take chess as a serious hobbie in his life (rated 1500, please correct me if i am wrong) he has taught me enough to make me actually love the game of chess whereas not a single person in my class plays the game.

MarvsC

jrobiiiiiiii....jrobiiiiiii....

drunkgoose

its all about kingscrusher, strong player, funny and instructive.

@chessBlunderer

yes, i enjoyed his videos very much as well when i started a few month ago. but then i read the things i mentioned above and i looked for other channels. i found "chess network". but now i want to watch more videos and i wanted to give jrobichess another try.

but i think i will watch Alexandra Kosteniuk's channel then instead. thanks tricklev! hope she's not too fast for me in the commentaries... have yet to check them out

jrobichess This guy taught himself chess and started playing in July 2007. Beginners shouldn't teach chess because they have wrong ideas. There's one game in the world championship where he got the last few moves wrong. He didn't bother to fix them. That's lazy and that says you don't really care about chess. If he really cared about Chess then he would take his channel off youtube. LOL. Game 2 - jrobichess

kingscrusher This guy beat Colin Crouch way back in 1999. So if you don't like his voice that's one thing, but he is in depth. Compare this to the same part of jrobichess and you'll see what I mean.   Game 2 - kingscrusher

Claus Jensen is another with a blog. He says he's a Master, his profile at RedHotPawn .  ... This is Claus Jensen's Game 2.

There's another guy for vidoes:

GreenCastleBlock, an Expert who does live blitz games. I think he's pretty good!

I don't know about Sean S Godley except that he's also an Expert.

PeterLalic

The username "DraganLalic", in my opinion, is the best Smile.

Well worth a look from everybody - you can type "DraganLalic", "Chess Chatter" or "Lalic" in

Must be something wrong with your sound system on your computer unless you don't like the English language spoken with an English accent.

Kingscrusher's videos are the only YouTube chess videos that I watch with any regularity. Listening to him thinking aloud while he plays blitz is quite instructive.

I've also played the man at another website, corresponded with him on several matters, and count him among my Facebook friends. Among people I have never met face-to-face, but am able to count among my friends, he is near the top of the list. I do hope to meet him when I am in London for a week this coming fall.

If you enjoy listening to jrobichess's comments, listen to them. It doesn't matter if he doesn't have a solid understanding of the game, because even if Kasparov himself was analyzing games most of us would not become better chess players just by listening to him.

littlehotpot

chess.com is on YouTube and some of their videos are on there

drunkgoose

Don't really understand the 'english accent' thing anyway. Its just how the language is meant to be pronounced. You don't say a french person speaks french with a 'french' accent do you? Wink

tarikhk

kingscrusher and majnu( thanks tricklev) are all you need.

I am a beginner and you CAN get better or worse by listening and watching videos. It's just another type of instruction.

The problem with DraganLalic  is that he praises jrobichess. That just makes him seem like a cheap copycat. I think Lalic is an expert, but when he talks like that, he sounds like a beginner. Youtube has a lot of garbage chess videos. If Dragan wants respect, he should cut his ties from that guy.

eXecute

ChessNetwork has some good videos too.

GM Henrik Danielsen also has lots of youtube videos regarding the Polar Bear System.

Jrobi is okay for beginners, but his analysis is often too facile for anyone more advanced, I think. Many times, his only comment about a move will be "developing his piece to a good square." Also, he's kind of notorious for constantly starting various "series" of videos that never go beyond one or two videos, at most.

I find Kingscrusher to be far superior, mostly because he'll go into more depth about sidelines, tactics, plans, and strategies.

As a beginner I can say he is definately "NOT okay for beginners." He doesn't understand the ideas of the moves or concepts. He passes these mental mistakes in his videos. The last video I saw he said a Queen and Bishop make a powerful attacking duo. It's not true. The Queen and Bishop are weak because the bishop only controls a certain kind of color. The good attacking duo is a Queen and Knight because they cooperate. That's just one of the so-called chess facts that I must unlearn because of jrobichess. HE SUCKS!

Slatherdfoe:

Actually, the queen and bishop ARE a powerful combination. Set up correctly, they can form a 'battery' which will put extreme pressure on your opponents position, and can smash through their defences. Also, if your enemy has weakened himself on the light squares, a light-squared bishop and queen can be a formidable duo indeed.
