Does smoking improve your chess?

Harry Pillsbury was a chain smoker

Talfan98

scientifically smoking supplies nicotin which is a stimulant but has long term effects if refer to michael tal .

if smoking makes you feel better while playing then smoke at your own risk though  better alternative is coffee which is more healthy and common option which is recommended at tournament halls while smoking is band .

back to topic smoking  doesnt provide any extra processing power in chess , only a stimulant and stress reliever , cancerous on the long run if i may add

Talfan98

there is no scientific evidence smoking increases a chess players capabilities , tal and pilsbury were special cases or couincidences is more accurate but they didnt last long , tal actually lost a world championship due to health issues resulting from smoking preventing him from preparing well for botvinnik

Cool    I've been a heavy smoker for over 45 years, since the age of 13. I quit smoking 3 weeks ago (day 22 now) and during the 1st week, my TT ratings fell by well over 100 points. The second week, things leveled off, and during the third week, I regained 60 of those points.

Smoking, or rather quitting smoking does most definitely affect your concentration, in the short term at least but, I now find that my thinking is clearer and sharper each day.

Smoking is only good for giving you lung and heart disease, as well as a host of other medical problems and makes you, your clothes and your home smell like an ashtray.

Anyone thinking about quitting this horrendous addiction - DO IT !

I have always been told that it robs oxygen from the blood.  Therefore as the blood travels to your brain and you attempt to think, your brain does not receive the vital oxygen that it needs to fully perform at your highest level.  Any instance of a great player smoking would simply be coincidence in my opinion.

i reckon its gonna take doctors orders for me to quit , probably been smoking for 30 + yrs now

when im in a otb match i smoke (outside) it gives me a chance to focus my thoughts , i agree with brianladsovich , the rating drops when yu aint got a smoke , im happy that this is a temporary part of nicotine withdrawal , and like blarg dragon applaud him ,

I know several people who thought they played better when smoking pot. Turns out that what they thought did not match with reality much.

Good to know I'm not smoking pot then, better than pain killers though. Only in case of some serious health problems anyway and when approved by the doctor, meaning rarely or better yet almost never, nonetheless for some people it's apparently like smoking cigarettes.

I used to play at Chess Forum in NYC a lot.  Back in the late '90's it was often crowded with chess players from around the world and there was always a heavy cloud of cigarette smoke hanging over the tables.  Though I'm not a smoker myself I'd believe any player who told me it helped his concentration.  Among other health benefits nicotine is a known aid to cognition.  And, even though it's a stimulant, nicotine makes the user feel relaxed.  Since success in chess and cool-headedness go hand-in-hand I'd be willing to agree that nicotine is a performance-enhancing drug for chess.

Poison is medicine when applied with the right context.

yes , however it has a drawback in otb chess , indoor smoking is generally persecuted these days and you must smoke outside , this means you are away from the board and in a timed game well,,,,,,,,,,,,

it does however act as a stress relief and this is a good thing when engaged in mental fight so pros and cons
