I play 2...d5!? against the alapin sicilian as my go to opening and alot of the positions seem strikingly similar to a few Scandi lines so I just think its common sense to start studying these positons as well but just wanted to be sure.

The way the mind works is this:  Short term memory, conscious processes, then if repeated, the unconscious consolidates and there are protein changes at the synapse to make the behavior permanent.

So say you study one opening over and over, it becomes habit, and you recognize the variation more in play.  Other openings and any play will also compete over time for dominance in the neural system of the brain.  Will any study affect your unconscious planning and shape recognition?  Yes, definitely.  If however you want to master one certain technique or objective, you must study say, for an hour, wait a while doing something else not chess related, then study it again, another hour.  And dont stop doing this until you've got it.

Also, as far as openings go, or any play, make attributions to what each move is doing in terms of tactics, shape, long term and short term implications and how that affects strategy or what you are trying to do.  By labelling moves consciously in your mind, the unconscious or subconscious will be trained and your unconscious mind can work with what your declarative or conscious memory can decide to do during practice, training, and games.

Really? That's great info?

So, based on that information, how much does studying the Scandinavian help in playing the Black side of the Sicilian Alapin?

With c3 and c5 played it doesn't seem to be the same pawn structure to me.  Maybe post a variation you often see as an example?

Yeah, seemed like totally off topic info to me.

I just took a glance at my databases to be sure because I rarely play the Scandinavian as Black. Waffle's right, white almost never plays c3 in the first few moves of the Scandinavian, and Black rarely plays c5. There's relatively little consonance between these two opening pawn structures.

I played the scandanavian briefly for about a few weeks after i learned the Qd6 lines...and a little of the Qa5 lines. I quit as soon as i realized i hated black's position. They are not at all similiar to the alapin sicilian. White's d4 pawn isnt isolated in the scandanavian, which makes it totally different. They are not similiar.

I can see why you think they are similiar...but this is not the case.

I am a scandi guy; throwing caution to the wind I even play it in OTB games, often to my peril against better players.

So rushing in as foolishly as i do I have sent challenges to you guys.

chessmaster102 may wish to follow the series of game if you all accept...
