does the gap between rapid and blitz decrease for most people as you go up?

Hi,

As the title. I see many of my friends who are 2000+ in rapid and their blitz is similar or even higher. On the other hand, for lower-rated players, there is often a significant gap between blitz and rapid; 200-300 points seems fairly normal.
--
It seems my rapid and blitz ratings are starting to converge over time as well. I remember having like around a 200 pt gap when I was 1500, but as of right now my blitz has been mostly in the 1750-1800 range lately, and while I haven't played rated rapids on this account in a while (my 2nd was at ~1840 last I played) I don't think I would be 1900+ rapid.
--
If indeed this is the case what causes it? It suggests that two people can be, idk, 300 points apart in rapid but 500 points apart in blitz (for example) and that would be fairly normal/typical. Does that mean that as your rating increases your ability to see patterns quickly gives you more of an edge compared to weaker player? Idk, I'm just guessing.

I don’t know… all I know is I suck so hard at lower time formats. It makes no sense, as you’d think having ADHD would make me more suited to blitz and bullet but I just start to freeze up, I think.

1800 rapid, 1500 blitz. 300 points of difference! I don’t play bullet, really and my win percentage would suggest that I could get it up by playing it, but it doesn’t feel like real chess to me…

I think the gap in ability measured by performance would inevitably increase. Blitz is not for everyone but all good players can play rapid well.

I'd say that as your chess understanding increases, your need for longer time controls decreases. You become better at identifying (and/or recognizing) the needs of the position on first glance.

@DoYouLikeCurry At last! Someone agreeing with me on bullet not being real chess

No it's not. Tho it can do only 1 thing.

Make you think faster.

For me it's a different case

I grinded Bullet first then Blitz now I'm grinding rapid.

I see, that seems to make sense

How do you get better in blitz, suggestions will be great value

I don't think so, at least not in how you are probably thinking @ice_cream_cake

Maybe the gap between rapid and speed chess will lessen slightly as they go up, but for most players, their rapid will be a few hundred points higher than bullet/blitz because the extra time on the clock gives them more potential for finding better quality moves.

For the higher rated players with bullet/blitz close to their rapid, this is probably because their primary time control online is bullet or blitz and when they play longer time controls, they move similarly fast and just don't fully utilize all of their time.

Hmm.

I don't know about that. I've seen many people on my friendlist whose level >= mine and have seen many whose blitz and rapid are close, and from what I seen it isn't because they don't play rapid or don't utilize their time. I can also tell you that blitz/bullet are not my main time control (I've been playing those a lot, but not seriously, and I use my clock when I play rapid). In fact, the only people > my level on my friendlist with a substantial gap between rapid and blitz are you and this other guy who doesn't like fast tc (I beat him in a rated ~1650 level bullet game back when he was still like +300 over me in rapid).
--
i have a classmate who is 2000+ otb and plays online as well. He doesn't like blitz and calls himself bad at it, and his ratings in blitz and rapid are similar.
--
In fact there is this site which makes comparisons between ratings and while I don't think it is all that accurate, it does show that blitz tends to catch up to rapid (and apparently, eventually surpass it).

One of my recent opponents is 1400 blitz 1900 rapid, I crushed him easily btw

I'm (marginally) better than you in rapid but 600 points worse at blitz

Sometimes they just don't correlate.

Back up your words with actions! You've said that multiple times tongue.png

By playing better, which won't happen if you play only blitz.

Simple, heh?

BringBackDemon1

People quit playing rapid up high because they’re wusses and think everyone’s a cheater in rapid.

And if you’re decent at rapid, you only need to play a lot of blitz games to get used to it and bring the rating up.

My bullet is 200-300 points higer than my other rattings

Rapid pool is stronger than blitz pool. Therefore,to make themselves feel better, they don't play rapid
