I was hardcore trashed, and slurred a word I thought was intriguing; I then spent a few minutes trying to spell it out.  And thus, here we are!

When I saw trysts had posted, I was hoping to hear her story.

It's kind of naughty, pushwood47, so i'll have to keep that one to myself

Hey, you can't say a story is naughty and keep it to yourself.

The clms stands for Crystal Lake Middle School and there is a lot of history in that nick. Crystal Lake Middle School chess started 6 years ago when I asked and got permission to teach chess as part of the Building Bridges after school program. It was slow at first... most middle school kids thought chess was not cool. Our first few seasons competing at Polk Scholastic Chess (4 large monthly team tournaments plus one championship tournament: almost 700 student players) was brutal... the academy schools just killed us. But little by little as the team was built up we became increasingly competitive... until... 4 years ago we took out the defending Middle School Champion (an Academy) edging them out for 3rd out of over 20 other middle schools. The next year the whole season team championship came down to one game (the last game still playing in the playing hall) our 6th grader vs. Their undefeated (15-0) 8th grader. We were in 2nd place by a 1/2 point behind this team. If they win or draw that game, they take the season championship by a 1 1/2 points... if we take the last game... we win the Championship by 1/2 a point. I did not have the heart to tell my student that everything was riding on his game. As other students finished there games, I kept asking how his game was going/ who was winning. One student would report that he was losing, the next player would say that he was winning and was up a piece (alright!)... but the next would report that he was down a piece (oh nooo!)..lol. Finally, all players and games were finished except THAT game...until finally.... out walked my 6th grader... in his usual calm poker face demeanor. At this point.. Im going crazy..but, I calmy just smiled at him...

...to which he gave me his standard "thumbs up". He won. And Crystal lake won their first county championship in school history.

The next year we re-peated as champions going undefeated/ winning all four monthly tournaments.

This year we did it again... posting 3 perfect 16-0 Tournaments.

Im am very proud of our players.

Wow, a great story.  That's the sort of thing every scholastic chess coach dreams of achieving with their kids.  Congratulations Smile

Nice that you didn't tell that kid about the importance of his game... I wonder if he would have played worse with the added pressure.  And the conflicting reports about how his game was going Laughing.  I once reported on one kids game to his father as it progressed because he didn't want to make his son nervous by watching so I kind of know the feeling of anxiety trying to figure out how they're doing but not allowing yourself to look and see.  Like Joseph-s said, the stuff of movies!

Your absolutely correct... it has been an increadable ride. I do cherish the last two years but that first one (championship)... that was something special. I have two students that are on the current team that were there as 6th graders... when their teammate walked into that skittles room. One still plays games here (the rest play on chesskid.com) and his nick is DC_cookie_G. He, with 3 other of his team mates will be in action this weekend at the Florida Class Championships in Orlando.

Avatar of Vergelegen

Vergelegen is an area next to Strand and Somerset West here in the Western Cape about 45 kilometers east of Cape Town an False Bay. I am English but come to South Africa very often (my wife is South African). Her first language is Africaans and I have a lot of fun trying to pronounce some of the Africaans words. Vergelegen is one of those words I love. It is pronounced Fair-cha-lear-cha-n, where ch is gutteral like the ch in "loch". When I got proficient at saying the word correctly, I decided to use it as an English exclamation swearword! So now if something goes wrong I shout "Oh Fair-cha-lear-cha-n!! What a stupid..."   I expect you get the idea...sorry.
