Doping in chess

Hello chess world! I was just wondering on the ethics of doping in chess. I do speak of mind altering substances.. I am not here to advocate any type of illegal activity. Rather, we are a multicultural bunch and I speak with respect to all.. I assume some people might like to be in their zone when they play.. For example, Let's say Yuri in Odessa likes to take a couple shots of vodka and plays.. Or perhaps in the USA where marihuana legalization is taking place, Janie smokes one to sit down and spends a couple of hours playing. Then you could have Hans in Hamburg with some type of anfetamine.  Now one thing is enjoying the game, and how one wishes to partake is one's personal preference, however if it actually crossed the line and thereby one of said substances could actually improve their game? Is that unethical? What if one plays worse under the influence, but still finds the game fun and engaging! Is that wrong? These were some thoughts on my mind.. Thanks for reading. Peace to all. May God bless.

Is there something that works? I'd like something that could work

I think modafinil  has been shown to work for otb performance in at least one study.

I have dabbled with racetams before with mixed results. The thing is, it takes the right dosage to get in the proper headspace, and sometimes it just backfires lol.

I guess you could rely on the brain working. I know, it's a radical idea...

Alcohol impairs your ability so if anything it will make you perform worse. However, if you take just a little bit it might just work for blitz games, but nothing guaranteed. There's a Magnus story where he was having a bad streak in a blitz tournament, went up to his hotel room, downed a couple of shots and came back to perform better. But then again, it was blitz, and it's Magnus, he's no parameter for anything chess-related.

I imagine coffee should help a little bit if you're not one of those people that get super anxious with caffeine, but nothing extraordinary. It's not going to make you beat that one dude at your chess club who is always whooping your @ss.

Weed makes your calculation slower, tend to make you overlook simple/obvious moves if you're not careful and often makes your mind wander into some non-sense dubious sidelines . But it does help you flourish your creative side when playing chess if you manage to avoid all the other issues that comes with it.

As far as other drugs I am not sure. But I do imagine that amphetamine drugs, often prescribed for people with adhd, such as adderall, vyvanse, ritalin, etc should help you get in the zone and superfocus if you take the right amount. I also imagine that would be considered doping.

I want to try an anfetamine

I imagine that ketones can't be considered doping, since that's what your brain is using if you're on a ketogenic diet. Nothing magical about ketones, except your brain operates more efficiently on ketones - probably better concentration, less brain fog.

I can report alcohol is bad for chess performance. I lost about 90 points in rapid alone in the last two months but it was a lot of fun.

I think alcohol with blitz or bullet pairs well.

All drugs that are not allowed in FIDE tournaments are here: https://www.wada-ama.org/sites/default/files/resources/files/WADA-Revised-2014-Prohibited-List-EN.PDF

From personal experience of taking Adderall, I doubt it will make you play much better. Adderall helps with concentration but it won't make your understanding of chess better. It can definitely help you concentrate better but you'll still have the same level of comprehension but maybe taking Adderall and studying chess can help.

I mean I’m significantly better  when concentrated so that’d help XD

I just played a tournament sober and ended up winning against stronger players. I’m starting to believe I should play chess sober from now on.

doping isn't as big a deal in chess.

the only kind of doping that i would say gives an advantage are ones that provide mental and physical endurance.

Because no drug is gonna make you play better chess, it just won't. Chess isn't like a sport, its a board game where your knowledge and experience, combined with your talent determines your strength, those don't increase with doping.
