When playing as a top professional, all openings lead to an equal position, so it's a matter of what kind of positions you prefer or know best.
When playing as an amateur, you may fall into a worse position even if they play bad moves due to your lack of knowledge and experience. So it's ( again) a matter of playing positions you prefer and know best.
Most popular are 1...c5 and 1...e5
1...e5 involves more classical type of play i.e. easier to understand the strategic themes. So this is a good one to start with (and of course it's also played at world champion level).
It's not that you will understand all the various middlegames that stem from it right away, but it grows with a player more readily.
although rare lines are logically rare, but you can try sometimes like scandinavian d5 or caro kann c6 and make ur opp stunned. Try to understand and practice with ideas of common opening lines.
Openings are meant to be chosen according to the style of play that suits you. if you are looking for a solid opening which will be difficult for white to break down, you should be profitable with the french defense and the caro kann. If you prefer attacking play with solid chances to wrest the initiative from white, sicilians are preferred. Studying the themes of play of the openings will enrich you on which one is suitable for you.
