En Passant

I would like to know more about this bizarre rule. I’ve never played the move nor had it played against me. I would not recognize the opportunity if it were presented. Can anybody post a game in which it was played? Has it been the rule since time immemorial or was it added sometime we know about? Is there a rationale for it? Is it played more by grand masters? Has it ever been decisive in a championship match?
I hope there’s a deep student of the game out there with answers because I’m losing sleep here. I even played a beginner bot with no purpose other than to create a position to play it. No such luck.

I have gotten en passant in many of my games before, but I this probably isn't easily searchable via a database/archive, so I'll just show this clip instead for the super rare en passant checkmate!
