en passant étiquette when opponent doesn't know about the rule

Sometimes...late at night, when I'm alone....

I fantasize... about what the custom-made "thread killer" virtual trophy looks like.

I mean, is it purple?

Indigo?

Or perhaps a shade of chartreuse with flecks of hyper-saturated pistachio?

It's a rhetorical question; no need to answer.

I guess, I will kill the thread. With my sharp logic, there will be no reason to continue discussion about en passant:

When a player commits to en passant, his king is safer, unless there are open files along the b, or g files. Beginners should be taught king safety. Therefore, if a beginner does not recognize the move, they should be chastised, because only through the most brutal and vigorous chaste, will one learn the true lesson.

Congratulations, kayknight and verygoodman!!!

For the very first time in history, the "Kill The Thread tm" game has been declared a tie (or draw, or stalemate, in your parlance)!!!

You will both recieve one half (.5, 1/2) of a virtualized, custom-designed trophy in exactly seven days!!!

Syd_Arthur

@kayknight, we can offer you .65283 of a virtualized, custom-made trophy, color of your selection.

We may even be to able to include some kind of smiley face emoticon if you agree!

Syd_Arthur

Can't do the math right now, so it'll be 50/50.

Syd_Arthur

And, sorry, but no smiley faces are currently available. : (

Kaynight's a troll. Don't give it to him.

Syd_Arthur

Obviously, this discussion has gotten way...way ...way off topic.

So, let's all agree to finally grow up, and END IT! (maybe start a fresh thread about en passant somewhere else)...

Right here.

Right ...Now!!!

P.S. No need to actually agree (by posting). No response will be considered an implicit confluence of ideas (or disagreement).

Bye.

No way I'm reading all this, but #5 was funny. (I hope 5 was the burp one.)

@TheBlueKight9,

Who's side are you on?

Or would that be "telling"?...

If I'm in doubt, I will ask if they know that rule, long before I need to use it. If they say no, I often adjst my play accordingly. Say my ( white) pawn is on d4. I think about pushing it to d5, to lock their pawn on c7. Wait, I better ask if they know en passant. If no, Ieave that pawn on d4, and do something else.

Usually won't matter. If they're that weak, I going to win, no matter what happens.

I don't think any less of amateaurs who don't know en passant. It is the goofyest rule in chess, designed only to p*ss off beginers.

You need to stop playing so many fish.

If my opponent doesn't know en passant, I'll tell him about it and recommend Fred Reinfeld's books in the library.

But no, if I was planning to use it, I never back down on it.

Hell, I was planning to play a game of chess, and the other guy lied when he said he knew how.

The rule came about with the Italian pawn double move, which was meant to speed up the game, not to allow Pawn exchanges (and file opening) to be prevented.

Syd_Arthur

Hmm, varelse1, thanks for your response.

I didn't think that far ahead in the game I was playing, and it just kind of came up.  It was player who had a board out at at a flea market, just looking to play random people as a pastime, so I figured I'd sit down and play a game.  Before I knew it, en passant was the best move, and I used it.

But, as I mentioned, when he protested, I capitulated.    But it did feel weird, like he thought I was trying to pull a fast one.  I won't say who won, but I think your second paragraph is usually accurate.

Again, I feel it was not this player's fault, but that of a chess teaching culture that does not drill in the importance and primacy of "special moves"...like en passant!!!

Asking ahead of time is something I will consider in the future, in friendly games.  Thanks.
