I forgot to add that I googled several engines but the descriptions never said whether the engine can suggest more than one reasonable move for a particular position. I'd have to download and try each one. I'm hoping someone has already found one that offers what I'm looking for.
Engine that suggests more than one move
Thanks for the response. I'll try your suggested engines but in response to your comment "I don't remember seeing an engine that can't do this", here's what I found:
I tried Crafty and GNU Chess. Crafty does not seem to be able to suggest more than one move for a position. I checked the documentation for command-line commands.
With GNU Chess, I can't find any good documentation but I tried it with Eboard and Xboard. Neither interface seem to offer the choice to see more than one suggested move.
Regarding Toga II, is there a GUI that you recommend?

It might be the interface, I'm pretty sure crafty can do it. Never used chess engines on linux though.

I'm pretty sure almost EVERY engine can give multiple lines of analysis at once, it's just a case of modifying your GUI to encompass this.
How you would go about that, however, I couldn't say.

You can use SCID, Toga can definitely give more lines in Scid, Robbolito can't. So, I guess not all engines CAN do that.
{edit, sorry, I didn't get the LINUX bit, don't know if there's a SCID for LINUX]

Robbolito can give out multiple lines of analysis, so it's the gui's fault there as well/
Hmmm, that's strange, I get a little counter for toga, which I can adjust, for robbolito it's there, but disabled...
Hello,
Does anyone know of a free chess engine, that runs on Linux, which can suggest more than one move for a particular situation? I'd like an engine that can analyze a position and display, say, the four best moves along with their scores.
