English pawn structure guidelines
The best circumstance in which to play a Botvinnik formation is one in which your King's Knight still has access to e2 / e7 (ie: your Knight has not yet moved to f3 / f6) and the opposing Queen's Knight no longer has access to c6 / c3 (ie: the opponent has already moved either Nbd7 / Nbd2 or c7-c6 / c2-c3).
