Enjoy chess, but terrible player

I absolutely enjoy chess, but I am an awful player...well not awful, I just lose all the time and I'm not sure what I am doing wrong Cry.  How can I fix this?

Thanks

Masakari
practice.
Jesstears

I am currently on gameknot.com and playing all the games I can and now I'm here (joined yesterday).   I am hoping that I will win a game legally instead of by default such as "timed out" by opp.

Any good sites for me to read?

Masakari
here is a good place to start. hit "Learn" up above and read through some articles. is there any specific area of your game you're looking at concentrating on? practice doing puzzles here, to sharpen your skills too.

Welcome to Chess .com, i think you will like it here.

You're at the best place to learn.

Practice makes perfect. Good luck and don't get discouraged!!

Well, I just played a live game and did alright...almost won, but didn't pay attenting and got snagged.

I think I need to plan my next move while my opp is moving.  I also need to look at the board more carefully.

I know there's other things I'm doing wrong.

What about the mentor thing they have here?  Any good?

Masakari
think it costs money. if you're just starting out, the articles, tactics trainer, and puzzles should be enough to help you tremendously. besides that, just play. you'll learn something every game.
Jesstears
Thank you very much for all your advise.  I will continue to play and not discourage.  Oh, that's another downfall of mine, getting discouraged really quick.  Need to get rid of that real quick.

I think alot of us are trying to improve our game. Just choose one thing at a time to improve then when you feel you have that aspect mastered move on to the next.

Welcome!

The Tactics Trainer is great and addictive!

Jesstears
That's the problem, I don't know what my main weakness is, so it would be hard for me to pick one thing to concentrate on.

Analyzing your own games is a good start. Also, most of the Novice Nook articles over att chesscafe.com are excellent!

thank you farfor.Cool
Dahan

Welcome,

I'd say setting realistic goals is important. Don't worry to much about your rating. Just try to get better. There's some good books out there, check your library. But, as has been said, the main thing right now is to just keep playing. Good luck to ya.

Jesstears
Thank you dahan.  I currently have Idiots Guide to Chess.

The  thing that helped me the most, is learning to read my oponents.

like why did he make that move? what is his plan.

If u know his plan and what he's thinking u can attack his plans and win.

Jesstears

Ah, good idea.  Thank you.

WOW Surprised I have received so much advice it has really motivated me even more to play.  I currently have two games going on here and six at gameknot.com

Thank you all so much.

stormcrown

Um, you'll fit right in.

Record your games, do some analysis on what you think about the moves, and post it all in the "analysis" forum.

You should grab some books.  They will help you a lot, especially the ones by Silman.
