Just got a draw via threefold repetition against Magnus 24. Lol. Where do I apply for my GM title?

yer full of it...

one thing I know is I have studied chess seriously for about 20 years. I've played in serious competitions otb and also played a great many players. My rating is about 1800. I've played against both masters and experts. What I'm trying to say is Magnus 9 is definitely not 1500. I've played it up to 9 years and 11 months and I can honestly say it is not intermediate strength at all. I would say 9 years 0 months is at least 1600-1700. As you go up, I believe at 9yrs 5 months it jumps up to at least 1900. At 10 year's you enter master range. Still it's a chess program, so I believe there is no real comparison for rating. Magnus is harder than you think.

Yeah boy! Finally beat Magnus 9 yrs 11 months. that's it for age 9. now onto 10!!! :D http://play-magnus-replay.azurewebsites.net/#/byFmJTTyn

played in us open in 2007 or 8. The rest are just local events. I did get to play a few training games against IM Valeri Lilov. My other friend who moved won the US open in Reno a few years back. bought a car and moved to San francisco. He told me before he left that I was a really good player. The point is that Play Magnus is hard in tournament mode. that's the point I want to make. it irks me when people sneer and say, "that's easy!" like I'm some parser who started playing yesterday, I'm 36 years old and I first learned the game at age 16.

That whole presumption on rating individuals based on what the personal belief is can categorically stigmatize others into assuming a role that sets them up for failure.

Nekhemevich

or maybe I am just stupid... I really don't care anymore...

BlackAkres78

Cool. I am 36 as well. Started playing 12 years ago...

You know what's cool about 36 is starting a whole new 12 yr cycle. That means life starts a fresh new period of change for better or worse. its exciting!

Nekhemevich

and as far as I'm concerned it can only get better... I hope.

The play Magnus app is sort of odd in that the virtual Magnus (at age 10 at least) is usually extremely difficult to beat, but every once in a while someone like me is able to get a win. I'd guess that my rating would be no higher than around 1500-1600 USCF (which might possibly be too generous... I really have no idea), yet I've beaten an engine around 1800-2000 elo and drawn against an engine billed at 2800-2900 elo... Play Magnus is rough but he has his off days lol.

Nek,

I absolutely agree! Cheers to 36!

so I got the magnometer and honestly thought what good is it anyway? But when I used it I could see the board more clear and played a really great game against 10. I actually was up a pawn and winning and really should have won but at a crucial moment I made a poor decision and saw the game slowly start to equalize. At least I was able to draw. This play Magnus app is great! I feel like I'm really starting to improve. :)

I beat Magnus @ 25 year old.

def the Magnometer is fun and helpful for monitoring strength and weakness of moves, however I am skeptical of using it too much because the meter itself is telling us rather than doing the assessing on our own, which is how it always goes. great analysis tool though! it's a nice addition. it kind of reminds me of the meter in the small fish app for Apple.

Yeah. The funny thing is I get to watch mine slowly fall into red further each time I move; in most cases. lol :D

I don't think you can estimate anyones rating based on the play magnus app. For example lets say that you defeated magnus aged 10... did you manage that by thinking 10 minutes for every move or did you blitz out your moves in a few seconds? The difference is obvious.

exactly. I look at play Magnus as a good way to gauge progress as you move up the levels. Aside from that I don't believe you can really estimate rating. There is more to otb than pure calculation. What I learned is play Magnus will play like an engine, and throw a few bones in the road intentionally for you to pick up on. that's where magnometer comes in. I honestly enjoy the strength of play Magnus and the challenge it offers. I really think it is a great tool for learning. :)
