Exquisite Chess set hand crafted in prison.

I recently re-joined chess.com and their first act to make me feel welcome and loved was to lock me up in solitary confinement. This of course makes perfect sense, I mean why would a member want to communicate, ask questions or feel welcome?  First test his mettle under pressure and see if he brakes down, this way we know the members have some resolve.

I was given copies of the ToS to read and memorize and every morning at 4 we had to get up and swear allegiance and fealty to a guy named Erik. Then we had to sing his praises until 7am before we got our only meal of the day which consisted of dry bread and a good beating.
Not one to stay idle and knowing how the monotony of prison live can drive you nuts I started making an exquisite hand crafted chess set from stuff I found in my profile.

The pawn was meticulously hand carved from candle wax. Finely chopped cat hairs and navel fluff was added both of which are not only esthetically pleasing but also awesome binding materials for the wax. I then rolled the pawn in dirt to give it a nice honest earthy feel.

The knight was crafted from old bread and the attention to detail is not only wonderful but also very pleasing to the eye. Note the ears and mane, the latter was made from darker crust to make it stand out.
I gave the knight a good wide base making it a very solid and playable piece.

For the rook I was fortunate enough to find a rat's nest in a dark corner of my profile which supplied me with a wide range of material. I combined it with the toilet roll and small piece of tp I was issued with when I joined the site  to make this very dapper looking rook.

I will post the rest of the set later, but I just got parole and it is really an emotional time for me right now.

bunicula

brilliant!  mcgyver could take a lesson or 2.

we still need the king, queen and (gasp)bishop.

Dubious-Duck

Thanks man, for obvious reasons I did not make a bishop but made an elephant to keep the set real, trust worthy, free from religious propaganda and correct. It is also true to tradition which makes it doubly correct.

I love this set and its commentary on the penal system, recycling, ingenuity, and it's probably only a step or two away form inspiring socio-economic trastises, too. Humanity has never been so eloquently condensed, and I would give almost as much to touch it as I would for a pair of nitrile gloves beforehand!

Dubious-Duck

Thanks Blarg, the dead cockroach on the rook is symbolic of course. It speaks to the player of the dichotomy of the theory that chess is like life. The feathers gives the piece an airy playfulness contrasted by the formidable and stark crenellations and to be honest the contrasting play in texture and form I employed is really a case of crenulations vs crenellations which has baffled chess players for ages.

exactly, I mean you sound like you have a pretty serious condition and/or faith/ cult thing going on and you are here. They said it is not personal it is just that they hate me.

Dubious-Duck

Thanks Fugitive, this particular set will become my personal analysis set though.I will remind me of my time in solitary so it has a lot of personal meaning. I can of course make you one, I had a look at the prices of crappy wooden sets some folks rave about here ,even if most of them are unimaginative copies. I was thinking $150 plus postage will be a very good price. This will of course include the board.

Pulpofeira

I just love this guy.

Banning the duck(s),
Just a consideration.

As social human beings, we are partly defined by whom we interact with and through the relationships we have. This applies to members as well as staff.
The riff raff one has to deal with when hanging around this site is mind-boggling. For weaker minds enough to develop an eating disorder.
It is advisable to anyone to lower the intensity of your interactions with those 'people'. Taking things personally is often a by-product of this intensity.
Taking things personally and feeling our integrity is being questioned, grants certain individuals more power over us than they deserve or should ever be allowed to have.

Like I told the guy whom I called a 'deviant scumbag' in a bar the other day.
"You shouldn't take it personally"

It's truly masterful that you managed to capture so much symbolism in just a single piece. And with each piece being different and perishable, you show the transience and novelty of life. What did you make the board from?

The duck working on his chess-set.

(from the movie, "Schwarz und weiß wie Tage und Nächte", 1978)

personally, I think you should try to strangle the rats in your prison and gnaw at them until you get to the skull.

attached is a photo for inspiration.

realizing that the artsy pewter is prolly beyond your craftmanship.  on the other hand, the more realistic building material should/could greatly enhance its appeal.

just make sure you sign it, "el Pato Sanguinario!  Sentenced to life for straggling a man, and ripping his body in peices and feeding it to sharks"

Dubious-Duck

Patzer my craftsmanship is prolly beyond your appreciation for art. On the other hand suggesting I use more realistic building materials should/could greatly enhance your chances of getting blocked.

Seriously man, I am talking navel fluff and cockroaches and you are suggesting I compromise my art by using the same stuff a gazillion sets has been made out of already. Find me even a single google image to compare with my work. Also what kind of person would want to strangle a rat !? People like you make me wish I never left my profile.

Dubious-Duck

I am still working on ideas for the board Blarg , it will probably be newspaper based, I like the idea of moving the pieces across articles on crime, lies and injustice which was the bases for my arrest.

Dubious-Duck

Thank you FM NR, your support and understanding helped me endure a lot of the stuff that was done to me over the last two weeks,

KingTrader

Sensational! I am not for a second diminishing the art, but I do love the fact that if one were in a tight corner (as you probably were) this set could double as lunch.  (Hell it could maybe even triple and may well even go further so to say than the fishes and bread...). But it somehow reminds me of how some of the monstrously rich enjoy tucking into animals on the Red List.  The inappropriateness of consuming such fine works just turns ones stomach.  This is not NOT, let me hasten to add a judgement on the comestible itself, I am of course referring to the tragic cultural heritage loss that our children would have to bear of na'er being able to gaze loving as our ancestors did at unicorns and other lovely young things frolicking about.

Dubious-Duck

KingTrader your are clearly a highly evolved and sensative human being with an accute understanding for art and symbolism. Your use of words are most excellent as ' comestible' proves. The parallels you draw between my pieces and the thing with the bread and the fish is beautiful and I will probably use it in future when talking about this set, only I will act as if it was my idea ,it's that great.

I can honestly say that posts like yours are a balm to the soul to the point where I really regret having sold mine so many times in the past.
